Congratulations to Jaysson T. Brooks, M.D. on receiving a $150,000 grant from the Orthopaedic Research Education Foundation (OREF) and Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) for his project titled “Understanding Factors Influencing Attrition in Orthopedic Surgical Training.”

When an orthopaedic surgery resident does not finish their training program it can devastating for the physician and for the program. To date, no study in orthopaedics has tried to understand why residents leave their coveted training programs, from the trainee’s perspective. Dr. Brooks will be working with Drs. Herge and West in our Psychology department to interview these former orthopaedic residents to identify common themes that contributed to their attrition, in order to improve the retention of future orthopaedic residents.

Congratulations, Dr. Brooks!👏

Bodhi's resilience shines as bright as his smile! ✨

Bodhi was born with fibular hemimelia and his family came to Scottish Rite to receive care from pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Corey S. Gill. After carefully discussing options, Bodhi’s family decided to proceed with amputation to remove his right foot and be fit for a prosthesis.

After several months of physical therapy, Bodhi has proven he is capable of any challenge! He has started walking and running and his favorite activities include climbing on furniture at home and throwing or kicking toy balls.

You are just getting started sweet Bodhi, we can't wait to see what will come your way! 👏

Meet our kind-hearted ultimate girly-girl patient, Micaela!🎀

Originally from Puerto Rico, Micaela was born with several conditions. She was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis, a spinal curve that is present at birth. She also has tibial hemimelia in her left leg, meaning part of the bone in her lower leg was missing at birth. This ultimately led to the amputation of her lower leg. Additionally, Micaela has dysplasia of her left hip, a condition in which the hip joint did not form correctly. Because of these conditions, her family recognized early on that she would need specialized, expert care.

Dr. Jaysson T. Brooks leads Micaela's spinal care and her team of orthotists creates prostheses that adjust to her physical needs and aesthetic preferences, incorporating rainbow and unicorn designs. 🌈🦄

Micaela's positivity shines bright and we are excited to see where her future will take her! Read more about her story here: https://bit.ly/43ipYG9

Congratulations to William Z. Morris, M.D., on receiving a grant from Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) to study the long-term functional outcome of late-detected DDH.

Morris specializes in hip disorders and is passionate about research that helps transform the lives of our patients. This grant will allow Dr. Morris and the team from our movement science lab to bring back adolescent and young adult patients previously treated for childhood developmental hip dislocations to compare how our treatment choices impact hip function in the long term.

Meet our sweet patient Aurora! 👑

Aurora was born with fibular hemimelia, a rare condition that caused her fibula, or calf bone, to be missing in her right leg. Unsure of the journey ahead, Aurora and her family turned to Scottish Rite in hope of finding answers. Dr. Corey S. Gill and his care team educated them on their options before they decided to move forward with amputation.

Now, this tea party-loving, doll-cuddling ray of sunshine is proving that nothing can slow her down! With strength, courage and a heart full of joy, Aurora is ready to take on the world — one fabulous step at a time. ✨

Meet Emma — a passionate figure skater with a heart as big as her dreams! ⛸️💕

After a fall on the ice, Emma began experiencing knee pain that wouldn’t go away. Looking for answers, she turned to Scottish Rite for Children, where Dr. Shane Miller and his team diagnosed her with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of her left knee.

“Without Scottish Rite, Emma would not have discovered her diagnosis or started treatment for her rare condition,” says her mother, Jenny.

Emma not only found healing but also inspiration through her journey. Moved by the care she received, she chose to give back — raising money for Scottish Rite as part of her bat mitzvah service project.

Emma, your generosity and determination are truly inspiring. Thank you for making a difference! 💙

Meet Audrey! 👑💕

Audrey became a patient at Scottish Rite when she was diagnosed with potential muscular dystrophy at 8-years-old. Audrey was later then diagnosed with scoliosis and recently had surgery for her discoid meniscus. Defeating all odds, Audrey has not let anything set her back.

She was crowned Miss North Texas Teen in November, 2024 and continues to pursue the things she loves including cheerleading and crocheting!

“Scottish Rite gives me the opportunity to live a life without pain and future medical complications related to my condition,” said Audrey.

We are so excited to see her take on great things. Go Audrey!!!🎀

Meet brothers, Timothy & Elliot!

Timothy, age 12, and Elliot, age 9, came to Scottish Rite when their mother Melisa noticed they were struggling to read. Eager to learn more about how she could help, their mother Melisa turned to Scottish Rite's Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders.

Both Timothy and Elliot were diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. They have been receiving intensive intervention, - Elliot through Scottish Rite's Build curriculum and Timothy through our Take Flight program. We are so proud of the progress these boys have made! 🙌

Meet our inspiring patient, Mickel!

Mickel came to Scottish Rite during high school when he noticed the curve in his spine had gotten progressively worse. After a successful spinal fusion in 2019, Mickel is back to doing the things he loves, hiking, running, swimming and lifting! He’s enjoyed coming back to Scottish Rite for follow-up visits and has even had the opportunity to work with our research team.

“After my spinal fusion, it took some time, but I eventually regained my confidence and sense of self, along with a desire to pursue more physical activities. I've been spending more time with friends and overall enjoying life. I don't think any of this would have been possible before my spinal fusion, and for that, I am grateful,” said Mickel.

Keep reaching for the stars, Mickel! 🙌
