📉 The State of the Nation’s Diet – and What We Can Do About It
The latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2019–2023) was published this week—and the results are sobering.
Despite everything we know about the benefits of a healthy diet, as a nation, we’re still falling short. Some key findings:
🥦 Fibre Intake
96% of adults and teens didn’t meet the daily fibre recommendation (30g for adults).
Fibre is crucial not just for digestion—but also for gut health, weight regulation, blood sugar balance, and even energy and mood.
🍎 Fruit & Veg
Fewer than 1 in 5 adults (17%) eat 5-a-day.
Among 11–18-year-olds, it’s even lower—just 9% hit the target, with an average of only 2.8 portions per day.
🍭 Free Sugar
The recommended maximum is 5% of daily energy intake.
Only 19% of adults met this. The average was double the recommendation.
🍔 Fast Food and Takeaways
77% of adults and 81% of teens reported buying food from cafes, takeaways or restaurants in the past week.
For those who did, nearly a quarter of their daily calories came from these meals—along with high levels of sugar, saturated fat, and salt.
Why This Matters
These eating patterns are a direct hit to our gut health. A lack of fibre, overreliance on ultra-processed food, and too much sugar all impact our microbiome, energy, immune health, and long-term disease risk.
But it doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul. Small consistent shifts—like increasing plant foods, adding wholegrains, or swapping your usual lunch for a homemade alternative—can make a real difference.
What Can You Do Today?
✔️ Add one extra plant food to your next meal
✔️ Switch white carbs for wholegrain (even just once a day)
✔️ Choose water instead of a sugary drink
✔️ Carry fruit or nuts to reduce reliance on grab-and-go snacks
✔️ Think “add-to,” not “cut-out” – build a better plate, don’t restrict
Every small action moves you (and your gut) in the right direction.
