In addition to being an certified Gentle Sleep Coach, Linda Szmulewitz is a licensed clinical social worker and a DONA trained postpartum doula. In January of 2010, she developed and began facilitating The Chicago New Moms Group (www.chicagonewmomsgroup.com), a 6 week educational and supportive program for first time moms of babies 0-6 months old. As new (and also veteran) parents, we often don't

realize that becoming a good sleeper is a learned skill, one that your children will be using for their entire lives. After working with tired families for several years, she realized that to continue to be truly excellent at helping parents learn these valuable tools, she needed further training and support. She became trained as a certified Gentle Sleep Coach with Kim West, aka The Sleep Lady in June 2012. The training comprises over 80 hours of training and course work with leading experts in the area of child development and sleep medicine as well as ongoing clinical supervision and case consultation. Are you making this sleep mistake? 🤔

Not being patient with the sleep training process can deter your child’s progress. It can be difficult, frustrating even, to hear your child cry. However, there is bound to be pushback; if your child is accustomed to being held at bedtime, they will likely be upset when you suddenly stop holding them. It takes time to break a habit and start a new one, but patience and consistency are key. ☝️

We frequently emphasize the importance of bedtime routines around here, but should they be limited to nighttime sleep? 🤔

The answer is…

❌ No! Your child’s nap routine should simply be an abbreviated version of their bedtime routine for night sleep. The routine you follow for naps is designed to help your child’s brain go from play to sleep, which is more difficult during the day. At night, the brain produces melatonin, and there is all the sleep pressure built up from the day helps you fall asleep at night. None of that exists during the day, so naptime routines can help your child’s ability to shut down for sleep.

Managing parent preferences at bedtime can be difficult. Here's what it might look like for you:

✨ Prepare your child for change: start talking to your child about how each parent will take turns putting them to bed so they know what to expect.

✨ Support your child's feelings: You can let them know, “I know that you miss Mommy. Tomorrow it will be her turn to do bedtime. Which of these two books do you want to read tonight?”

✨ Use a visual cue: Incorporate something like a calendar to keep track of whose turn it is, so your child knows ahead of time.

✨ Stand your ground: Don't give in to temper tantrums!
