Low vision—vision impairments that aren’t completely correctable with glasses or surgery—affects many in our region.

The MedRVA Foundation has teamed up with the Richmond Flying Squirrels to offer 5 free tickets for each home game for people with low vision. Tickets also include a handheld radio broadcasting Sports Radio 910 to hear play-by-play of the game and, for some games, an enhanced game day experience.

Congrats, Janette Cheely: April’s I Make A Difference Award winner!

We think Janette’s picture should be included in the dictionary definitions of the words “Ownership” and “Excellence.”

From taking the initiative to go through the ambu bags and be sure they are all up to date, to organizing supplies and decluttering the unit, to being a leader in EChart, to always maintaining compliance in the pharmacy and keeping us stocked on medications, she constantly goes above and beyond in her department to ensure things run smoothly, while still offering exceptional patient care.

Janette recently filled in as charge nurse while one of our nursing managers was on vacation and she took on the challenges of the role with grace and positivity. She is always someone you can go to who is willing to help.

We’ve spent over 70 years working to change the way healthcare gets delivered. But who is MedRVA, and where did we come from?

Our story started when a philanthropic and prominent Richmonder, Ginny Fox Beveridge—herself, blind—bequeathed funding to start an eye surgery center to help others in her beloved community. Richmond Eye Hospital opened downtown in 1952. It was an immediate success, becoming a national leader in eye and, later, ear procedures. When MCV purchased the hospital building in 2002, the organization used the proceeds to open its ambulatory surgery center at Stony Point and continued its community outreach with its foundation. The new organization took on the name MEDARVA, short for “Medical Arts of Virginia.”

Today, we’re MedRVA— two campuses where over 200,000 surgeries and countless imaging procedures have been performed, and the MedRVA Foundation, which funds low vision care for the underserved and other community-building and strengthening programs.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of eyesight. It’s a severe eye condition with no early symptoms and can lead to vision loss if not treated. Early detection is essential. Regular check-ups for Glaucoma are important for people of all ages. #GlaucomaAwareness
