That after birth high. There is nothing like it.

I learned so much from this birth. My last birth was incredibly empowering and a beautiful experience. But long, painful, and the hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished, and this time around, I wanted an easy, pain-free labor and I wanted it to be much shorter. I got exactly what I wanted.

Here are the things that helped me, in a nutshell:

•neutralizing previous traumas and memories that might have held me back
•choosing a birth team and environment that supported my desires
•preparing my body by staying active during pregnancy
•nourishing my body with whole plant foods
•enjoying pregnancy rather than complaining about discomforts (positive mindset and gratitude!)
•learning skills and techniques to embrace each contraction (this was KEY!)
•creating a birth manifesto and visualizing my birth daily
•inspiring myself by talking to other mothers who had positive birth experiences
•protecting my mind by avoiding all dark images and stories, especially in shows and movies
•connecting with my husband physically and emotionally

I could go on and on. Birth is something most of us only get to do a handful of times. And I’m so so grateful for my experience.

"Shake that ass!!

If there’s no progression in birth one of the reason can be that the baby isn’t in the right position in the pelvic.
A wiggle on your ass/hips can help the baby find that space it needs so continue to rotate down the birth canal!

You can do it yourself by dancing/winding ( which even gives you more oxytocin!) , your partner or midwife can help you like in this movie, or you can use a Rebozo scarf and wiggle that baby down ( check out shaking the apples ).

I don’t know how many births I’ve attended where the birthing woman is laying on her back in the bed for hours without any progression and the solution at the hospital is to give you drugs to make the waves stronger!
If the baby is in the wrong position then that can cause a lot of distress for that baby!
So before agreeing to that-
then get yourself up and shake that ass!!"

I always tell folks that while *most* first births are marathons…you never really know. And then I tell them this story 😂

First time mom went into labor and let me know contractions had started. She was planning on a birth center birth…and so she knew all the things to do in early labor. Rest. Eat. Hydrate. But within an hour or so, her husband reached out and said things were picking up. I heard her over the phone during a contraction and told them I thought it might be wise to head in.

Dad called me back about 5 min later and told me her water had broke. I heard another contraction and I said we should *definitely* all head to the birth center.

I grabbed my bags and hopped in my car.

As I was driving down South Broadway, I saw dad calling again and I just knew why he was calling.

“We can see his head!”

I told them to pull over, and I somehow happened to be driving right behind them. When I saw his car turn, I turned as well and hopped out of the car.

Dad was a neurosurgeon, and so I knew he would be calm under pressure. He was! A random ambulance happened to be just a few yards away from us…and so once they saw what was happening…they ran over.

They tried to get her out of the car and onto the gurney, but I said “no way!” (She was already crowning)

I kind of blocked the paramedics so that dad and mom could deliver their baby with as little fuss as possible. They did amazing, of course!

We were close to the birth center, so they decided to just drive mom and baby instead of transporting to the hospital. I hopped in the back of the car, and just offered reassurance. We made it to the birth center and settled in for some skin to skin.

So moral of the story: birth is always surprising. Not all first births are long. If your baby is coming fast: deep breaths, you’re doing this and you’re doing a great job.

Did you know that when mom puts her hand on baby’s head as it’s emerging, it helps prevent tearing? We encourage this and see that it also helps moms to connect, and push gently. This is “hands down” (see what I did there?) one of the most helpful things to do to reduce tears needing repaired. Other helpful things are: a diet with healthy fats, squatting throughout pregnancy and mom choosing her own position when pushing.

Being a mom is a precious feeling ❤️.
Breastfeeding doesn't mean that you should abstain from life 😉😉

Not all mamas make sounds during labor - some find it more supportive to keep all their energy and focus inside and on the breath. But, for many, sound is a powerful way to move through labor and birth. Here are ways that sound can help:

Moaning - one of the most common sounds a laboring mama will make - from outside the birthing room sounds a lot like the sounds you hear during s*x. The key to moaning is to send that vibration down into your pelvis with a low, deep tone - truly as low as you can go, and to keep your jaw loose - which correlates directly to a loose and relaxed yoni. If you hear yourself making high-pitched tones, which are more up in the throat, remember to go lower and deeper with your sound.

Deep, audible breaths - these help release muscle tension, which can help you dilate and also rest and replenish between contractions. Breathwork can also be used during pushing to ‘breathe baby down’ rather than ‘bearing down’ (which often leads to tearing).

Affirmations/mantras/visualizations - Whether you think these to yourself or say them out loud, affirmations can help keep you focused and confident. Some of my favorites are:
🌸My baby and body know how to birth
🌸Every rush is one step closer to meeting my baby
🌸I am doing this
🌸My cervix opens up like a flower, I release

Crying - While you may not envision yourself crying during labor, I’ve seen tears of release, fatigue, and raw emotion. Tears can be a powerful release that facilitates opening and releasing fears and obstacles. Don’t be afraid to let your tears flow.

Roaring - birth is primal; it’s no surprise that many of us get on all fours, “snake” our bodies, and roar, summoning all the strength from our being, and calling on the power of women past and present to bring baby earthside. Remember to bring that roar into deep tones, rooted deep down in your body.

Grunting - often a sign that baby is low or on perineum causing an urge to push.

Trust your instincts, mama. Release your baby with whatever sounds your body naturally wants to make as you welcome your baby into the world. xo.

1. Everything is not meant for social media
2. Some of these “icks” are just excited mamas and family members

We should feel comfortable and safe with our providers during a time when we are most vulnerable. I wouldn’t feel either with these nurses.

A group of Emory nurses in Atlanta have been fired after participating in the Ick Challenge. The group shared their "Labor and Delivery Icks," where they took turns complaining about what annoys each of them most about different expecting mothers at the hospital.
