✨It’s time to share an update on the future of The Birth Hive.

The Birth Hive was born (quite literally) in my shower while I laboured with my second baby in 2015.

Since then, I’ve had the absolute privilege of supporting hundreds of the best families across the Lower Mainland. During this time my own kiddos have grown from babies to BIG kids (as you can see)!

Every single family I’ve worked with has blown me away with their compassion, kindness, and strength. I’ve felt SO freaking lucky (and honestly, a little undeserving) to be welcomed into the circle of such high-quality humans. You’ve all inspired me in your own ways… TRULY.

Some of you may have already heard whispers of what’s to come next, spoken softly in the quiet moments of labour or once baby was born…

I supported my last birth in September. Since then, I’ve had wonderful doulas take over my caseload, and they’ve now built thriving practices of their own. It feels like the right time to officially close the books.

What’s next? I’m heading back to school in September to get my teaching certificate📚

It’s my not-so-secret hope that I’ll reconnect with a few doula babies in the classroom in the future! Wouldn’t that be the most INCREDIBLE full-circle moment? 🥹

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for letting me be part of your stories.

If you want to stay in touch—I would LOVE that! Feel free to PM me for my personal IG so we can stay connected there as I don’t plan to check this account much moving forward.

💕Steph

✨In honour of World Doula Week!✨….. Some of these make me laugh, none of them are true! Here are some common misconceptions about who doulas are and what they do.

Myth 1 - They only support unmedicated, vaginal births.
Doulas know that birth is not a one-size-fits-all kinda thing. From spontaneous, unmedicated vaginal births at home to cesarean birth, there are many directions birth may take us. A good doula knows how to adapt to meet your needs based on the specific circumstance.

Myth 2- You don't need a doula if you have a midwife
There's a reason midwives love working with doulas and it's NOT because we perform the same role! But we do compliment each other well 😉 A midwife's focus is on the overall health + safety of your baby (and you). While many of them love being able to provide hands-on comfort techniques, they have other responsibilities that trump their ability to be the primary caregiver of emotional + hands-on support. Doulas bridge that gap by being able to focus solely on you + your emotional and physical needs.

Myth 3- They will replace your partner
There are some couples who do want their doula to play a primary support role - but that's something to be discussed in advance. A good doula will find ways to make sure the partner is at the forefront of support. Birth is a bonding event and we want to allow plenty of opportunity for birther + partner to bond with each other rather than with a doula.

Myth 4- You'll achieve your desired birth
Using a doula doesn't guarantee you'll get the outcome you want. We wish it would. But using a doula does mean you're more likely to have positive feelings about your birth, regardless of outcome.

Myth 5- They deliver babies
First of all, the only person delivering a baby is the person whose body the baby is exiting from (!). Other than that, the role of "baby-catching" falls to: birthers themselves (yeah you can!), midwives, OBs, GPs.

Myth 6- They're all "hippies"
There is NOTHING wrong with those who identify this way - but of course doulas aren't just one "type" of personality! There's a doula match for every personality type!

🎆Any of these doula myths surprise you?

“It is important and vital to give the mother/ birthing person time to bond with her baby. It is physiological. After a birth the hormones continue to work. Oxytocin continues to work. When you get to have time with your baby, uninterrupted, it will give you the best start to your parenthood and breastfeeding journey. Not only this first latch will release oxytocin allowing you to feed and bond with your baby, but it will immediately start to contract vour uterus back to its small size and will allow vour bod to eject everything to do with growing your baby: placenta, membranes and blood clots. In the following few days you will feel it continuing to contract every time you feed.
*top tip - do your pelvic floor exercises when you feed. It reduced the pain.
Hay universe - more magical births for me in 2023 please”

☝️It's a mindset shift that, to be honest, *many* of us are uncomfortable with. But it doesn't have to be that way! Spend a few hours with me and let me paint you the picture of what birth can be with the right knowledge, tools and, most importantly, the confidence to own your role as decision-maker.

We are BIG midwives fans around here! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I have NO idea how they do it - especially in a system that leaves them grossly undervalued and overworked. We see you and the difference you've made in the lives of SO many! Happy International Day of the Midwife to some of the very best people around.
