I, like you, am a woman over 40.

OK...truth?

I'm a woman over 50!

I cannot remember a time when I wasn't aware of the connection between who I am and how my body represents me.

Early on (around 12 years old) I realized that exercise was important and made me feel great. At the same time, I started reading magazine articles and scholarly newsletters about healthy eating.

I decided then that I was going to be a healthy person...even though I didn't really know what that meant.

After a brief career on Wall Street, my passion for health, wellness and helping others be healthy won out and I became a Certified Personal Trainer at 33 years old.

I quickly learned that women hiring a trainer wanted much more than a workout. They wanted to understand how to eat well. They wanted stress management techniques, and recipes, and they wanted to understand how to shop for truly healthy foods. Most of all, they wanted simplicity.

I've learned from working with so many women just like you that things are different for us. Women over 40 have different demands on their time. We have different track records with our bodies. We know more and we're often conflicted about taking the time to take care of ourselves.

“What protein powder should I use?”
As a Personal Trainer, fitness business owner, and nutrition coach, I hear this question almost every day from clients.

It doesn’t matter what goals they are working on (weight loss, strength gain, muscle building).

It seems to be common knowledge that to be healthy, you need protein powder in your life.

Just because something is generally accepted as true doesn’t mean that it is.

For centuries, we believed that the earth was flat. We now know it’s not.

So, is it true?

Do you need protein powder to be healthy?

I’ll start by saying protein is an important part of the health equation.

You need to eat protein daily to maintain a healthy body.

I’ve brought this dip to more than one gathering of friends and family and it is routinely “sold out.” I never have leftovers to bring home and everyone asks for the recipe.

Here it is:

1 can of chick peas (drained)
2 TBSP vegan mayo
1 TBSP mustard

For a smooth dip: Put everything into a food processor or blender. Process until smooth.

For a chunky dip: Mash the chick peas with a fork and then mix everything together in a bowl.

If you don’t care if it’s a vegan recipe: Use regular mayo. Making this change makes it less healthy, but equally delicious.

Note: Ingredients are approximations, adjust to taste. Add additional spices if you like, make it your own.

Other options:

You can use avocado in place of the mayo, ditch the mustard and add some smoked paprika for a slightly different flavor.

Use it as a sandwich spread. Think of it as the B in a BLT.

Dip chips, veggies, your finger…whatever you like.

Give it a shot. Experiment with flavors. Let me know how it goes.
