I lost a few of my colonies earlier this year (as did many beekeepers in Britain and beyond), so I've split a couple of the remaining stronger ones ... yesterday I found sealed and unsealed brood in both, so the girls have created themselves a Queen and she's mated successfully. Whoop whoop! I won't take their honey this year, they need it to get through the winter. Well done those women!

Be alert! Britain needs Lerts!

World Bee Day - Battling yellow-legged Asian hornets

This special day is a call to action to support over 20,000 species of bees globally. Begun by the United Nations, it acknowledges bees’ contribution to a sustainable future.

This year’s theme "Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all", highlights the critical roles bees play in food production, costs and security.

BBKA members have a special interest in honey bees and are passionate about them. In the UK we are hobby beekeepers with a small number of colonies each, producing delicious local honey.

This year especially we need your help. Whilst honey bees are not endangered, we see many threats to their welfare. In particular, in 2025 yellow-legged Asian hornets (YLH) are a special concern. This invasive non-native species has spread rapidly across Europe and now threatens UK biodiversity.

A Government backed eradication campaign is in place, but without public help to identify and report we fear YLH may become established, causing the biggest threat to honey bees and beekeeping in a generation.

We ask you to:
• See It – A large dark insect (2p coin size) with yellow legs & single orange band near the rear
• Snap It – Take a clear photo, from a safe distance.
• App It – Report sightings via the free Asian Hornet Watch app (Apple/Android)

We're entering swarm season in the UK, may there be many! I need 3 to come my way to replace the colonies I lost recently. I'm putting out bait hives this weekend - local bees are best, adapted well to local conditions🐝🐝🐝🤞🏼
