"Of those who did the mindfulness training, which included meditation and yoga instruction and CDs they could use at home, 43.6 percent reported a meaningful reduction in pain 26 weeks later."

Meditation can help relieve chronic back pain, and so can cognitive behavioral therapy, a study finds. But good luck getting insurance to pay for it.

"The researchers explained it as our brains only have a certain capacity for attention," Marchant says. "If you've got something that's really commanding your attention, there's less attention left over for experiencing the pain."

Science writer Jo Marchant says that the mind can play an important role in dealing with a variety of health concerns, including pain, heart disease and depression. Marchant's new book is Cure.

Shot in Fire Island, New York, this film (4min. 23 sec) captures the secrets of eternal youth as Maia Helles, a Russian ballet dancer turns 95 but still remains…

"I guarantee that if you get up and move more than you do, if you escape the chair sentence, you will be happier for it in some way."

Hint: The answer doesn't revolve around buying more gadgets. Nor does it depend on you dragging yourself to the gym seven nights a week. This calls for a concerted attack — while moving.

Our patterns of movement start early: "Before language, infants learn many skills and social customs by imitating others. Infants need to map the behaviors they see onto their own bodies in order to imitate."

Body maps, which show how certain parts of the brain correspond to the body's topography, have been studied extensively in adult humans and other primates. But now American researchers are among the first scientists worldwide to study body maps in infants, which can provide crucial information about…

What you should know about good posture.

Perhaps we'll name it the "smartphone shuffle."

Texting and walking is bad for your health. You can walk into a lamppost, knock someone over, or even walk accidentally into traffic. All valid enough reasons to keep your phone addiction limited to times when you are not moving. Yet now there is new evidence that all this distracted walking is doin…

...the more you play the piano, or football, the better you get at playing the piano, or football. So it follows that the more your whole system produces something like pain, the better it gets at producing pain.

A common recommended “don’t” of the Choosing Wisely campaign in the United States, Canada and now Australia is getting imaging for non-specific back pain. The initiative, which identifies tests, treatment…

"This study helps us understand the biomechanics of the knuckle-cracking event," deWeber says. "We are reassured that nothing harmful is happening inside. And ... maybe something helpful is happening."

A little MRI video seems to settle the decades-old debate about that loud pop of the joints: It's all about bubbles. But imagine an air bag inflating, not the bursting of a balloon.

"So, the truth of the matter, dear friends, is there is no "solid" matter. Everything you think of as solid — tables, chairs, a '69 cherry red Ford Mustang, your child's noggin — none of it is really solid. Instead, there are only rapid-fire bursts of pure energy carrying forces between impossibly small flecks of somethingness. And all of it is lost in an atomic void as empty as intergalactic space.

"Think about that the next time you plop down in a chair." :)

One of the strangest and least appreciated discoveries of modern physics is that solid matter is — to put it bluntly — a big lie, says astrophysicist Adam Frank.
