I wanna eat this, just because it looks so pretty!

This recipe uses pomegranates and right now is the time to be buying these. But of course, you could sub out the pomegranates for blueberries or even bananas, depending on what's available in your region.

What's fear got to do with pain?

And, why does FEAR increase our sensitivity to pain, therefore increasing our pain response?

Our brain's job first and foremost is to protect us. It's a survival thing. Back to the sabre tooth tiger days, if we didn't respond appropriately in a given situation, it's likely we would die. Simple as that. So our brain tends to shoot out the fear response even if the more appropriate response might be general concern or shock. Because, the brain reckons, it's better to protect first and deal with the fallout later.

But what does that have to do with pain?

Well, fear (a brain response) causes our bodies to respond accordingly. It tells us to get ready. We might have to run, fight or hide. Our heart rate goes up, breathing rate goes up, blood rushes to our periphery (limbs) so we can run if needed, we get a surge of adrenalin and cortisol (stress hormones) and our senses are on high alert - so we can respond...

Those hormones ⬆️, also stop our digestion and turn off our parasympathetic nervous system - or, the calming part of our nervous system. Those hormones also increase our inflammatory responses - so targets specific areas and inflames them. That might be your joints, or your back, your muscles or your head (or perhaps all the above).

So then the apparent fear goes away, but our body doesn't settle like it should, we still have things on our mind, maybe some niggling stressors or even deep held fears - like having that tough conversation with your boss or your partner, or jumping out of a situation that you know isn't right, or deadlines coming up that you cant avoid. But right now, it's easier staying there, cause the courage isn't quite strong enough. So the subtle stress and fear lingers, and lingers. And those body responses continue. And your brain becomes more sensitive and starts to over respond to every little ni**le, that in a non-stressed body would just be considered minimal.

A big part of learning how to live with and manage chronic pain, is understanding why your pain is there in the start.

And by this, I mean what was happening, before you got fibromyalgia or before you hurt your back at work or before you were diagnosed with arthritis. How stressed out was your body > or fearful was your brain and nervous system. So we work out the causes and then we use some specific strategies to help the brain soften and settle, so that the hyper-responsive state is normalised.

OR, if we flip that concept around - remember the last time you felt completely relaxed and at peace... maybe on holidays...
How did your body feel?
What happened to your brain fog?
What did you notice with your energy levels around that time?

Does this make sense? ⬇️🙋🏻‍♀️.

Hands up, if you've done some weird and wonderful diet/food program/detox cleanse/chinese medicine/western herbal medicine regimes that required you to drink some weird stuff?

I've certainly drank some weird stuff in my time and I'm not referring to alcoholic beveridges here....😉 And growing up in the herbal medicine world, I've tasted, smelt and consumed medicines to mostly learn about them, so I reckon I can tolerate most things (plant based anyway). Bitters for example, are pretty rough for most people.

I'm curious though, have you ever taken any liquid herbal medicines?

What was your experience?

Did it work for the intended purpose?

Tell me in the comments ⬇️

As a well oiled practitioner, I find that liquid medicines are typically better absorbed and can be uniquely tailored to you (as opposed to tablets or powder combinations -that are "off the shelf").

BUT, you have to take them. Obviously the medicine wont have the desired impact, if it's left to sit on your kitchen bench.

The beauty of being having a large dispensary at my finger tips, is being able to prescribe the right thing, that suits you where you are at on the day.

I know myself, that sometimes I can drink spirulina. For me, the health benefits of spirulina are HUGE. I feel so much better, lighter, brighter and clearer in the head when I take spirulina regularly.

But there are also times, when I cant stand the thought of chugging down a cup of green stuff. It's very much, horses for courses, right!

I'd love to hear your experience 🙋🏻‍♀️👌🏻.

FEELING EXHAUSTED?

Chronic pain and exhaustion go together, well.... like a puppy and nap time goes together. Isn't he soooo cute by the way........
But seriously, if you suffer with chronic pain, you WILL be exhausted. You are tired for a good reason and NO you are not just plain ole "lazy".

Living with chronic pain is H-A-R-D work.
Partly because you are sick of trying to convince other people that something is actually wrong. But also because your body is in overdrive A-L-L the time. It's doing it's best to heal you, but each system internally is getting overworked. AND you're brain and nervous system is literally on HIGH ALERT with anything and everything you do, hear, see or consume.

And, I'm pretty sure you have trouble turning "off" at night.
You're probably also a worrier.
And a perfectionist.
Am I right?

Annnnd, you're probably not sleeping properly... cause your brain wont shut off and let you properly rest, like I mean deeply rest. And if you don't rest properly, how can you properly repair and restore?

Is that YOU 👊🏻? Throw a GIF down in the comments section 👇🏻.

Are you tired, ALL THE TIME?
Are you waking up feeling exhausted?
Are you napping at any opportunity? And still feeling like sh*te when you wake?

So, no wonder you're tired.
And no wonder you're sleep is crap.
And no wonder you feel like you're on death's door...

So, what to do about it?
Firstly, acknowledge it (so stop banging yourself over the head with thoughts that you are lazy - cause it's like the silent pandemic out there right now - it's VERY real) and then dig into the WHY.
HINT: You might need help doing this, and if so, I can help 🙋🏻‍♀️.

But this is what we dig into:
Why is your body in pain?
Why is your body not getting adequate healing opportunities / why is it overburdened?
Why is your body not getting restorative sleep and rest?
Why is you're system in high alert mode?
How can I teach it, to rebalance and re-energise?

Chronic pain and exhaustion CAN be reversed using brain retraining techniques. I've done it myself. And I've walked my clients through the exact same techniques (albeit, a more refined process to the one I started out with).

✨ This is THE most important concept in pain neuroscience ✨.
But I get it doesn't make logical sense. It didnt make any sense at all to me, initially.

You can feel it right now, in your back, in your gut, in your pelvis, your whole body or wherever you are experiencing the pain. And that is REAL. But the brain is telling that body part how to respond, based on it's preconceived ideas about the situation/
And this is WHY, working with chronic pain is tricky.

But it's also amazing watching the 💡 come on, when people get it. Because it's this stage, that people's pain starts to change, to soften, to become more predictable and manageable.

Which Collagen to choose?

I talk about the benefits of collagen a LOT with my private clients with chronic pain.

So, it depends what you're goal is...

Bovine - high in most types of collagen (1,2,3), and typically cheaper than marine.

Marine - high in type 1 collagen and typically more expensive than bovine, but preferable if you are avoiding beef based products. You need to tolerate fish based products though - don't be fooled by thinking this is a vegan or vegetarian option. Marine collagen is mostly found in beauty based products (for obvious reasons as per below).

TYPE 1 COLLAGEN - High concentrations in skin (so use for skin integrity, wrinkles, elasticity and capacity to hydrate, nails). Mostly found in marine and bovine based collagens.

TYPE 2 COLLAGEN - High concentrations in cartilage, bone, connective tissues, spinal discs (so use for jointy type conditions - arthritis, stiffness, joint deterioration). Bone broths have high concentrations of type 2 collagen.

TYPE 3 COLLAGEN - High concentrations in intestines, muscles, blood vessels, uterus, mucous membranes (so use for gut integrity based issues, muscle development. Type 3 collagen is highest in bovine based products.

LOOK FOR:
% of collagen peptides per serve on the ingredients label. If the product doesn't state this, it's likely the % is quite low / as found in cheaper (inferior) products.

If choosing marine - always opt for "wild caught". If it doesn't state wild caught, it's likely to be farm based fish - fed on soy products / inferior / or cheap grain / mono-unsaturate fatty oil products - canola oil etc > cheap & inferior product!

For most uses, aim for 15-20gms collagen peptides per serve (but again, it depends what your goal is).

I've personally tried many versions... And I keep going back to the same practitioner product. And yes, this is definitely more expensive than some, but the cheap ones are really expensive if they are not doing what they were intended to do. Don't get caught out!!!!!
You can also add to yoghurts or meals generally and mix in. Usually you wont taste it, at all.

I use and recommend a practitioner based collagen product, chosen for superior quality, taste and dissolvability.

Hope that helps 😊
