Betsy the Doula I'm a Certified Birth Doula, (Certified Body Ready Method Pro), and Postpartum Doula. Hi, I'm Betsy! Both were so peaceful and quick!!

Mom of 4, with the oldest being almost 10 and the youngest turning 1 in June. My passion for all things pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding started with the pregnancy of my first. As a doula, I love empowering pregnant women to take control of their prenatal preparation. I learned with my first pregnancy that birth is a huge physical feat, so I give you tools and simple movement exercises (that I wish I had back then!) which will train and balance your body specifically for the task at hand: pregnancy, birth, and recovery. Not only can this minimize symptoms and dysfunction that we are often told is “just a normal part of pregnancy,” but it also prepares the body for a more efficient birth and a smoother postpartum recovery. I gave birth at a free-standing birth center, with the support of a doula and my spouse for my births and because of the encouraging environment created by them, I came away from both births feeling supported and strong. Then, for my third (and fourth) births, I had planned home births with a Midwife. My wish is for everyone to be able to bring their baby into the world feeling supported, cared for, and prepared. I believe in the empowerment that comes from taking charge of your own labor that reveals a deeper strength you didn't know was there. I believe our bodies know how to have a baby. I believe that a strong support system is soo vital in order to have a beautiful birth experience.

This move WILL make you laugh, but is a great one to get baby in a good position for birth. Recently, I was teaching it to some of the doulas joining Thrive Together Doulas.

More about it... 👇

The glute scoot is one of my favorite birth moves I learned from !

➡️ I include it in my Miles Circuit Upgraded flow because it works well when a client has been stuck in a start and stop labor pattern for a long time.

❓Why?

Because it is a very acute asymmetrical movement that not only creates mobility in the pelvis, but it releases low back tension!

Plus, it usually causes my client to laugh when she is attempting this move (which, laughter is also great in labor)!

So, try this:
✅ in the weeks leading up to labor
✅ you feel your low back is holding tension
✅ you want more pelvic mobility for a smoother birthNot only is it great to KNOW some of these tools, but it is extremely helpful to work with a doula that has gone through the Body Ready Method training and can help you know WHICH movements to do when, in relation to where YOUR body holds tension.

When Victoria was preparing for her second birth, she was very intentional and committed to her VBAC: showing up every day with movement, mindset, and trust. In the weeks leading up to labor, she was doing the upgraded Miles Circuit I had sent her, plus a “labor-inducing yoga” flow every morning. She wanted to give her body every chance to labor on its own and bring her baby earthside vaginally.

She waited until her body went into labor on its own 4 days before her due date, giving her the best chance at having a successful VBAC.

Labor was very hard, and long. But she persevered. She listened to my movement suggestions AND her body. Victoria showed tremendous strength and unwavering belief in her body!

——————

Victoria - I’m so glad you fought for this VBAC!! You got the birth you wanted and you were able to be fully present, fully empowered, and then bond beautifully with your baby!!

Her own words: “The relief and love I felt finally having this sweet baby in my arms is palpable in these photos… Thank you Betsy for supporting me so wonderfully during my VBAC.”

I so enjoyed supporting Victoria and also getting to witness Trevor care for and be Victoria’s rock throughout the long labor.
You all are amazing parents!

4 things I learned being a birth doula that might benefit YOU as you look forward to your own birth. 👇

I always take detailed notes during labors with my clients, to grow & be a better doula for the next birth.

1️⃣ The benefit of releasing your Psoas muscle in labor.

I haven’t typically suggested this move this early in our time at the hospital, but I will from here on out! It worked really well for my client!! This is because ⤵️

✨ The Psoas muscle is tied to the body’s fight or flight response.

➡️ Do you tend to be stressed in the hospital setting, or anxious about your birth?

✅ You can think of the Psoas Release as a much needed physical and emotional “reset” during labor.

2️⃣ Don’t underestimate the power of getting in the bath or shower.

My client told me that she said that she would have stayed in bed if I didn’t suggest the bath and then ALSO took the step of calling the nurse in to switch up the method of monitoring.

✨ She told me that the bath was EXACTLY what she needed.✨

✅ Get in the bath or shower. Even if you have to advocate for it and it feels like you are “bothering” the nurse. You are not, and getting in the bath is SO worth it!

3️⃣ The CUB has become my favorite tool to use in supporting an upright, efficient and yet restful birth!

When my client got out of the tub, she didn’t want to just lay on the bed right away, so I suggested using the CUB (which is just an inflatable U shape birth stool).

➡️ I placed the CUB on the bed, my client stood next to the bed, and was able to rest her upper body on the CUB.

✨ It was a perfect support since the top was a flat surface, and yet it had some give to it, so she could easily rock back and forth during a contraction when needed.

✅ The CUB works because it promotes a restful, upright position AND allows for movement!

4️⃣ Waiting until baby is +2 before pushing is definitely a good call!!

If you want to read the story of how pushing went for my client and how she only had 2 cervical checks during her labor, then read the full article on my website!!

FIRST, give me a follow, then Comment “4 things” and I’ll send you a link to the full article!

Our Story

Hi, I'm Betsy! I'm a wife and mom to 3 boys. My passion for all things pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding started with the pregnancy of my first. I LOVE to research, plan, and prepare. I gave birth at a free-standing birth center, with the support of a doula and my husband for my first 2 births and because of the encouraging environment created by them, I came away from both births feeling supported and strong. I gave birth to my third son at home, under the care of a certified midwife and with doula support. My wish is for every woman to be able to bring her baby into the world feeling supported, cared for, and prepared. I believe in the empowerment that comes from a woman taking charge of her labor that reveals a deeper strength within her that she never knew was there. I believe our bodies know how to have a baby. I believe that a strong support system offered to mothers, through their partner’s and a doula’s presence, can help them have a beautiful experience (whether natural or medicated) that they will relive the rest of their lives. I believe in Mothers and I believe in birth!
