Getting back to Essentrics. 🌹

Muscles can transform quickly with daily exercise. By contracting your muscles as they are being lengthened, you can protect your joints and build long, lean, toned muscles.

The increased tension of contracting while lengthening is known as an eccentric contraction. When muscles are in this lengthened position, they can build greater overall strength and as the muscle fibers stretch, flexibility and range of motion can be improved over time.

Strengthening this way will also improve power, endurance and boost energy.

💥 POWER: Tight muscles reduce our range of motion, which reduces the power available within our muscles. We need to be able to do explosive movements with our muscles as well as slow ones. Power movements are those rapid movements requiring a sudden burst of strength, like changing direction quickly in a sport or sprinting to catch a bus.

☀️ ENDURANCE: The longer you can stay in an exercise (like plies), the stronger your muscles will become over time – increasing the number of mitochondria in your muscles, which increases your energy!

🔥 ENERGY: Eccentric contractions use less oxygen and energy compared to concentric contractions, which can lead to increased endurance and reduced fatigue during workouts.

An eccentric contraction is key to a balanced body. Essentrics safely does this by moving the entire body on all planes using large complex movements. These complex movements activate and engage both large and small muscles, building strength throughout your full range of motion. When every muscle does the job it is meant to do, your movements gain a youthful vibrancy! 🌿

Honor your body with gentle movements.

The seated hip stretch is a perfect exercise to perform when you want to increase energy and relieve stiffness. When this central area of our body is well balanced and flexible, we can participate in activities of daily living with greater ease. Many muscles attach to the hip joint and if some of them are tight, the others must work extra hard, resulting in limited range of motion and fatigue.

It is important to strengthen and stretch all the muscles surrounding the hip equally and the seated hip stretch is a great place to start. Remember to breathe while performing the stretch.

The following tips will help you to get the most out of the seated hip stretch:

🔹If you cannot sit tall with your legs straight, sit on a cushion to elevate the hips.

🔹Pull upwards from the floor to lengthen the spine.

🔹Keep the chest open and lifted.

🔹Draw the shoulder blades gently together.

🔹Cross one leg over the other and plant that foot flat on the ground.

🔹If you cannot cross the leg over comfortably, then simply place it flat on the ground beside the knee.

🔹Use the opposite arm, to pull your knee toward your chest.

🔹Pull your chest toward your knee to keep your back straight.

🔹Don’t let the opposite shoulder round forward.

🔹Turn toward the bent leg mindfully, beginning with the lower back, then the ribs and finally the shoulders – only rotating until you feel the stretch.
