ISHA - The Hip Preservation Society Our vision is to be the premier international society for education and research in hip preservation

ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society is an international organisation which is focused on hip preservation surgery to enhance patient care and outcomes, through the delivery of training, education, support of research, sharing of knowledge and best practice, fostering global collaboration and provision of patient and professional information to improve hip care. Our mission is to create “healthy hips” by bringing hip preservation, prevention and treatment to all people regardless of age, social status, gender or economic situation. Our vision is a world with equitable access to quality treatment and the best achievable patient outcomes through improved access to appropriate treatment, early intervention, prevention and education, with the goal of us living in a world where hip joint replacement is only an occurrence of old age. ISHA’s purpose is to advance, enhance, and raise awareness of the field of hip preservation, to facilitate early intervention to improve patient outcomes.

Title of Study: Interportal Capsulotomy Closure Does Not Improve the Results After Hip Arthroscopy at 1-Year Follow-up: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Study

Authors: Bjarne Mygind-Klavsen, Otto Kraemer, Bent Lund, Michael Krogsgaard, Per Hölmich, Martin Lind, Torsten G Nielsen, Lene Lindberg Miller, Marc Philippon, Christian Dippmann.

Journal Reference: Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, September 2025, Volume 13 Issue 9. https://doi.org/10.1177/23259671251363604

Key Takeaways⁣
Randomized controlled trial, multicenter study in Denmark

Evaluate the effect of capsular closure on subjective postoperative outcomes and revision rates in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAIS

200 patients with FAIS were randomly assigned to either closure or no closure of the interportal capsulotomy at termination of the arthroscopic procedure.

The capsular closure was performed with 2 to 3 absorbable sutures, using the "Quebec City Slider" knot technique.

The primary outcome was the HAGOS Sport/Recreation subscale.

The secondary outcomes were the other HAGOS subscales, iHOT-12, HSAS, pain during rest and activity (NRS), and EQ-5D

Both cohorts had significantly improved scores 1 year after surgery, with no difference between the 2 groups, except for the HSAS

Conclusion: No effect on clinical outcomes (HAGOS, iHOT-12, EQ-5D, and NRS) 1 year after hip arthroscopy for FAIS of closure of the interportal capsulotomy at termination of surgery.

Title of Study: Return to Sport After Hip Arthroscopy With Full-Thickness Acetabular Chondral Defect Treated With Microfracture

Authors: Javier Sanz-Reig, Jesus Mas-Martinez, Marc Tey-Pons, Ana Castel-Oñate, Oliver Marin-Peña.

Journal Reference: American Journal of Sports Medicine. Volume 53, Issue 13, November 2025, Pages 3215-3222. https://doi.org/10.1177/03635465251381784

Key Takeaways⁣
Retrospective multicenter study from arthroscopy database of patients undergoing acetabular microfracture for full-thickness chondral lesions.

Evaluated outcomes in patients with chondral damage aged between 18-50 years undergoing microfracture for full-thickness chondral lesions versus a matched age and s*x cohort without chondral lesions.

Included 33 patients met the inclusion criteria and were matched with 33 patients without chondral damage.

Significant improvement from preoperative PROs to 5-year follow-up on both group

Sixteen patients (66.7%) in the microfracture group changed the type of sport they participated in, compared with 9 patients (34.6%) in control group

Conclusion
Recreational athletes with full-thickness chondral lesions treated with arthroscopy acetabular microfracture experienced similar return to play to recreational athletes without chondral lesions at the 5-year follow-up.

Role of Interlocking Pelvic Osteotomy by Dr Jessica Lee

Periacetabular osteotomy is a well-recognised treatment of symptomatic hip dysplasia in adults.

Dr Omer Mei-Dan has made improvements with the technique and developed the CU-PAO which has the advantages of a traditional PAO with low risk.

Dr Jessica Lee gives a comprehensive overview of the CU-PAO in this talk...
