Did you know that up to 85% of dry eye comes from problems with the oil glands in your eyelids?

The oil they produce is crucial—it floats on top of your watery tears like a “seal” that slows evaporation. Without it, your tears dry up too fast. This is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), one of the most common causes of dry eye.

But tear oil also:
• Feeds and protects the surface of your eyes
• Carries natural antibodies
• Helps your eyelids glide comfortably

To make healthy tear oil, two things matter:

✔ Good oils in your diet (omegas 3, 6, and 9 from small fish, nuts, and seeds).
Modern processed diets don’t provide enough of these.

✔ Good blinking habits
Your oil glands only work when they’re squeezed—meaning you need full, strong blinks. Screens train us to stare and blink weakly, which slowly shuts down the glands… just like a cow’s udder dries up when it’s not milked.

If you want to learn more about how to protect and support your glands, I’ve put together a simple guide here:

Your eyes will thank you for giving them the oil they need. 💙

Did you know your eyes contain tiny cells that actually look like little wine goblets under a microscope? 🍷👀

They're called Goblet Cells, and they’re responsible for producing the sticky mucin layer that helps your tears spread smoothly and protect the surface of your eye.

Here’s why they matter:
✨ They release mucin, the “glue” that helps tears stay on the eye
✨ Vitamin D and Calcium help activate their mucus production
✨ They also help regulate water on the eye’s surface
✨ Allergies, inflammation, autoimmune conditions, and dry eye can damage them
✨ Medications
can help increase their number
✨ Nutrients like Vitamin A support their growth and function

When goblet cells aren’t healthy, the eye becomes drier, more irritated, and more vulnerable.

These tiny “wine-glass-shaped” cells work harder for your eye health than most people realize!

Did you know your eyes have their own little oil factories inside your eyelids?

This natural oil is incredibly important, it keeps your tears from evaporating too fast, makes blinking comfortable, and protects the surface of your eye.

These oils come from Meibomian glands, which rely on a whole “family tree” of cells:
mother cells → daughter cells → oil-making cells.

But inflammation, diet, toxins, certain medications, makeup, and even everyday bacteria can disrupt this process. When the oil gets stuck or thickens, it can harden like wax and that’s when Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) begins.

This can lead to dryness, irritation, styes, and long-term gland damage if it isn’t addressed early.

The good news? Eating nutrient-rich foods like fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains can fuel the essential fatty acids your eyes need to produce healthy oils. Small changes can make a big difference.

💧 Did you know your water intake directly affects your dry eyes?

Dry eye specialists rely on the century-old Schirmer’s test to measure how effectively the eye’s “sprinkler system” produces high-quality aqueous tears. Despite its simplicity, it remains one of the most important tools for pinpointing the underlying causes of dry eye disease.

👉 If you’re even a little dehydrated, your eyes may not make enough healthy tears.

That’s because most of your “good tears” are made of water… not the reflex tears you get from watering, irritation, or crying, but the protective, nourishing tears your eyes rely on every second of the day.

When you’re dehydrated, or taking things like caffeine, alcohol, allergy meds, sleep aids, decongestants, or certain blood pressure medications, your tear production can drop quickly — often causing burning, stinging, fluctuating vision, and irritation.

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support your tear film. For many people, it’s the first step toward real relief.

If you’re struggling with dryness, irritation, or fluctuating vision, hydration may be playing a bigger role than you think.

Is your eye oil more like olive oil... or candle wax?

Dry eyes aren’t just about tears - often, it’s a “clogged oil problem.”

When the oil glands in your eyelids get blocked, the natural oils that protect your tears can thicken - from smooth oil… to butter… to wax. 😬

The result? Irritated, dry, burning eyes.

The good news? With modern heat-based treatments, like LipiFlow®, iLux®, TearCare®, and IPL, those glands can often be restored to healthy function.

🔥 Think of it as “melting the wax” so your eyes can feel like themselves again.

👉 Ask your eye care specialist which treatment is right for you.

Ever thought about the germs that live around your eyes? 👀

We’ve all become more germ-conscious since COVID-19, but germs have always been part of life — even on our lids and lashes. They actually feed on our tear oils!

When your glands are healthy, your natural tear oils keep germs in check. But when those glands slow down, the oils stagnate — turning into an all-you-can-eat buffet for bacteria. That’s when inflammation kicks in… and that inflammation can damage your tear glands, leading to more dryness and more irritation — the vicious cycle of dry eye.

Prescription drops can calm the inflammation, but unless we treat the root cause — those germs and stagnant oils — we’re just “kicking the can down the road.”

Think of it like dental care — daily cleaning keeps your smile strong, and the same goes for your eyes. The difference? We can’t replace our eyes like dentures, so they deserve our daily attention.

Stay tuned! 👁️

Did you know your eyes need oil just like your car does? 👀💧

Oil plays a huge role in keeping your eyes comfortable and clear — and up to 85% of Dry Eye comes from oil gland problems!

Here’s why it’s so important:
- Oil keeps your tears from evaporating (it’s like a seal that locks in moisture)
- It has natural antibodies to fight germs
- And it helps your eyelids glide smoothly with every blink

To make good oil, your body needs:
🥗 Good fats — Omega 3s, 6s, and 9s from fish (sardines, anchovies, salmon), nuts (almonds, walnuts), and seeds (flax, chia, sunflower).
💻 Good blinks — Because our oil glands only work when squeezed, and staring at screens all day means we blink less (and weaker).

So next time you’re scrolling or working, try to blink fully and often — your eyes will thank you! 👁️💖

A Thorough Dry Eye Exam Matters

When your eyes feel dry, irritated, or tired, the root cause often lies beneath the surface, in the meibomian (oil) glands that keep your tears stable.

Healthy glands produce clear, free-flowing oil, but when they become clogged or atrophied, the oils thicken or stop flowing altogether, leading to inflammation, dryness, and discomfort.

A comprehensive dry eye evaluation goes further:
🔹 Tear breakup time
🔹 Salt concentration
🔹 Tear volume
🔹 Blink function

These measurements help determine whether your dry eye stems from evaporation, poor tear production, or inflammation, allowing your specialist to create a personalized treatment plan for lasting relief.

💧 Healthy tears mean comfortable eyes — and clearer vision.

Why are tears important?
Maybe the better question is — why should we even worry about our tears?

The surface of our eyes is made up of living cells that need support — things like water, nutrients, oxygen, and protection.
Every other part of our body gets these essentials from blood, but imagine trying to see through blood! 😳

Instead, our eyes have something just as complex — tears.
Tears are our eyes’ bloodless lifeline — they do everything blood does for other tissues, but stay perfectly clear so we can see. 👁️✨

💦 Moisture is job number one, and tears are so important that we actually have two tear systems:

🔥 The Firehose – makes a simple salty tear that’s great for flushing out irritants or when emotions hit. Think of it as your emergency backup system.

🌿 The Sprinkler System – our everyday tear source. It’s a perfect mix of water, salt, protein, and oil — kind of like a salad dressing! The oil floats on top to keep the surface smooth and prevent evaporation.

Both systems can wet the eye, but only the “salad dressing” tears from the sprinkler system have all the good stuff that keeps eyes happy and healthy. 💧💚

What is Dry Eye Disease and why does it matter?

Dry Eye Disease affects more than 40 million Americans, yet many people don’t realize they have it. It’s a common, chronic, and progressive condition that can lead to:
- Burning, stinging, or scratchiness
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
- Redness or excessive tearing

At eyeThera, we’re a physician-led company advancing eye health through innovation and education. Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Edward Jaccoma, a board-certified ophthalmologist with over 30 years of experience in ocular surface disease, emphasizes that early awareness and proactive care are key to maintaining comfort and vision quality.

💻 Screen Time & Eye Health
In today’s digital world, we blink less when looking at screens, sometimes up to 60% less frequently. This reduction in blinking can cause tears to evaporate, contributing to dryness, fatigue, and irritation.

💧 Want to see how your eyes are doing? Try this simple Blink Test:
1️⃣ Blink twice.
2️⃣ Then stare without blinking for 20 seconds.
If your eyes start to sting, water, or blur, you may be experiencing signs of Dry Eye.

Through clinically informed design and trusted educational resources, eyeThera empowers both clinics and individuals to better understand and manage ocular surface health.

👉 Follow eyeThera for upcoming insights, videos, and resources to help protect and improve your eye health in the screen-focused world we live in.
