When I was in Mali, a woman pointed out that Malians were rich I. social capital but not wealth. She meant their deep community connections and support of each other.

James Clear makes a similar point:

"There are at least 4 types of wealth:

Financial wealth (money)
Social wealth (status)
Time wealth (freedom)
Physical wealth (health)

Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2, but rob you of 3 and 4."

This one's for those of us with a harsh perfectionist part. Try kindness, be gentle, and see what happens. Research shows this approach is more productive and makes us happier.

Practice. We get good at what we practice, and we're always practicing something.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about practice. With my clients, we talk about what they're going to practice between sessions. They're interested in positive change, and it requires intentional efforts to shift from our default mode and create new habits, new ways of thinking and feeling, new neural pathways.

Sometimes they think of practice as homework. But that's not it. Practice for change requires repetition.

This applies to everything we do. Take a moment, what are you practicing now? Consciously or unconsciously?

This really hit home as I'm practicing "walking" again after leg surgery. Each time, I see changes and know that if I put in the time, effort, and patience, I'll be back on two strong feet, walking, hiking, and not really thinking about the process. It'll become automatic, one of my defaults. But now, it can be frustrating and humbling. I remind myself of this concept, know I'm getting stronger, and visualize the not so distant day on two strong legs again.

Here's a short video on the concept of practice with a couple of tips.

Remember you are what you practice so make it count.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the concept of practice, because whether we’re consciously aware of it or not we’re always practicing something. And that s...

What's mental fitness? Why mental fitness boot camp?

Mental Fitness is your capacity to respond to life's challenges with a positive rather than negative mindset. Just like you can increase your physical fitness, you can increase your mental fitness. In mental fitness bootcamp, you learn how to strengthen the part of the brain that serves you and quiet the part that sabotages you.

Ever notice how your thoughts can wander away and create all kinds of worries? And you're no longer present? Our breath is a powerful tool and can calm, ground, and even energize you. Try it...breathing slowly and exhaling even more slowly. Feels magical and it's science☺️

Want to improve your Mental Fitness?

I’m offering a pro bono opportunity to be part of my pilot Mental Fitness Bootcamp starting in November. I’m looking for 2-3 more people who can commit to a weekly program for six weeks.
Interested? Message me.

Curious? Take the saboteur assessment, message me with your results, and we’ll set up a time to discuss what they mean and what’s involved in boot camp. There’s no charge, (the pro bono part), but I ask for your feedback at the end.
Go to https://assessment.positiveintelligence.com/saboteur/overview. It takes 3-5 minutes.

I’ve seen how Mental Fitness Bootcamp is a gamechanger for so many including myself. Plus it's fun and science based. Love that.

Ever feel stuck and anxious? NPR's Life Kit offers solid tips on the way to think about anxiety (it's our body's alert system or indicator light but doesn't mean it's always true) and tools to shift out of its stress mode to a calmer place. Quick read or 3-minute audio.

These are tips I teach and use. I know how hard and lonely it can be when you continue to function as if everything's fine in your personal and professional lives. Others are clueless as to what you're going through. Maybe they even turn to you because they like your calm demeanor. But inside, you're struggling with anxious thoughts while being present, or trying to be, and know it's not something you want to share with everyone.

Anxiety can feel awful. But it can also be a helpful warning signal — telling us when we're in danger or out of alignment with our true feelings. NPR's Life Kit has tips for dealing with anxiety.
