Cold weather actually has many health benefits! ☃️ Bundle up and head outdoors!

❄️ It's an old wives' tale that being out in the cold makes you sick!
In fact, it's the opposite! Being indoors for so many hours during the winter increases our exposure to cold and flu viruses and other germs, dirt, bacteria, dander, and mold. The more time you spend indoors with little or no ventilation, the more likely you are to be exposed. Get outside and breathe deep!

🧊 Cold weather can reduce inflammation.
Similar to putting ice on an injury, cold weather can reduce inflammation and pain. One study found that runners exposed to cold temperatures recovered faster from workouts. This suggests that exercising in winter may result in less inflammation and soreness than in the summer. If you're congested, cold air can also reduce inflammation in your nasal cavity, making it easier to breathe!

🌨 If you're feeling foggy headed, there's something to stepping outside for some fresh air to think! There’s evidence suggesting our brains work better at cooler temperatures.

⛷Cold weather may help you burn more calories. Our bodies have to work harder to regulate our body temperature, which can help us burn fat. A 2017 study of 53 people showed that participants burned 34 per cent more calories while hiking when the temperature hovered between -5°C and -10°C, than they did while hiking on 10°C days.

🤧 If you're an outdoor allergy sufferer, you get some relief in cold weather! Plants don't make pollen in the winter.

💙 Cold weather can be good for heart health.
In cold weather, the heart works harder during periods of physical exertion to pump blood and maintain the body’s temperature which is a good thing if you're healthy and trying to increase your stamina. However, if you’re at risk for heart disease, be careful when exercising outdoors in the cold. It can raise blood pressure, and decrease oxygen to the brain, putting stress on your heart.

What to do to get present through the mental load of uncertainty, novelty, unpredictability?
Sometimes, it's movement, physicality, doing. Taking action that guides our thoughts.
Our thoughts are very often not helpful - they can tend to try to keep us “safe” above all and tell us fear-ridden stories that can keep us stuck versus propelled to action.
Sometimes giving space for the body is just what we need - no matter how little we feel like starting.
Studies show physical movement not just helps with all above but releases BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor), which stimulates brain growth in the memory, learning, language and logic centers. Could be helpful for all about now, and always.
Let the body lead the way.
Get on the floor. Grab some pillows, couch cushions, jump and push and roll and play. See what happens.
As always - read cues' and adapt, adapt, adapt. It's just the time to practice moving from overstimulation and back to regulated again and again.
There are many barriers that can get in the way of this type of play and activate our own nervous systems. check out the tag for some "barriers to play" posts.
How are you or kids playing this week?

People often ask how I stay consistent with my diet and workout regiments.

Typically, a lot of people say that my discipline is from my athletic background. To be honest, that is partially true. But I think for me, I stay disciplined because I also want to be the best I can be in every area of life so that I can be a good steward of what God's given to me. People often think of stewardship as something that only has to do with finances, but I think stewardship should be incorporated into every area of our life. That means in our time, our talent, our treasure, our resources, and also our bodies.

For me, a big part of being able to bring faith, hope, and love to as many people as possible for my life will be my ability to stay in shape, to be able to run faster and farther. To do so, staying disciplined in my spiritual life, social life, and physical life (diet, sleep, nutrition, etc) is critical.

We don't know how long we have here on earth. But in that time, I want to run hard, I want to run fast, and I want to encourage as many people as possible.

I want to encourage you, wherever you're at in your life, let's ask, “how can we get better today?” “How can we improve today?” “Today, how can I address something that I put off for 10 years.”

Longer days in the van call for creativity, especially with 3 young kids. is one of our favorite ways to keep the kids entertained. We haven’t chosen screen time as a way to pass the time in the car, so we are thankful that we have toys like these to keep us creative.

Here is our oldest and her drawing of our van!

Exercise and movement does not have to be ‘all or nothing’.

Here’s a picture of me looking so professional (🤣) in my biking helmet and cool shades. You probably are thinking that I went hard on the trail, covering at least 25-30 miles. Nope.

My family and I hit the trail for a five-year-old paced 5 MILES. We knew that it wasn’t going to be a long ride, but it was still shorter than we thought it was going to be. But, the weather was perfect and spirits were high! We created a memory. An enjoyable experience that will pull our family back to the bikes again soon-that is more important than the mileage.
