HOW TO MASTER YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM: to master your nervous system, you must first learn about the two of the three autonomic nervous systems that are constantly regulating your body. Have you ever heard of fight or flight vs rest and digest? The first, fight or flight or sympathetic nervous system is the state where we see most of our patients “stuck” in. Do you feel constantly stressed whether at work, home, due to pain or injury or all of the above? Do you feel tense, anxious, or as if you are constantly “fighting or flighting” your way through life. Due to today’s fast-paced society and people constantly battling with their daily stresses and aches and pains throughout life, many people have a hard time snapping out of this sympathetic response. What most don’t realize is that constant sympathetic nervous activation can actually INCREASE tension and sensitivity in the body therefore increasing symptoms. In terms of controlling your nervous system, the first step is simply just recognition of being stuck in this sympathetic state, which will make it much easier to use simple tricks to hop into a parasympathetic, or rest and digest state. Through many techniques such as meditation, diaphragmatic breathing and many other relaxation or mental techniques, you can learn to take control of your nervous system and begin to feel back in control of your life once more.
