HOW TO MASTER YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM: to master your nervous system, you must first learn about the two of the three autonomic nervous systems that are constantly regulating your body. Have you ever heard of fight or flight vs rest and digest? The first, fight or flight or sympathetic nervous system is the state where we see most of our patients “stuck” in. Do you feel constantly stressed whether at work, home, due to pain or injury or all of the above? Do you feel tense, anxious, or as if you are constantly “fighting or flighting” your way through life. Due to today’s fast-paced society and people constantly battling with their daily stresses and aches and pains throughout life, many people have a hard time snapping out of this sympathetic response. What most don’t realize is that constant sympathetic nervous activation can actually INCREASE tension and sensitivity in the body therefore increasing symptoms. In terms of controlling your nervous system, the first step is simply just recognition of being stuck in this sympathetic state, which will make it much easier to use simple tricks to hop into a parasympathetic, or rest and digest state. Through many techniques such as meditation, diaphragmatic breathing and many other relaxation or mental techniques, you can learn to take control of your nervous system and begin to feel back in control of your life once more. The three most important aspects of any healthcare treatment. You can be the absolute best at manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, explaining pain science, but without love, empathy and kindness your treatment means nothing!

Limiting beliefs: What are they and how do we stop/prevent them. Limiting beliefs are just that... they are BELIEFS or an acceptance that something is true that may be holding you back from becoming the person you want to be. The point here is that other people may or may not have put these thoughts inside your head but YOU are the one accepting these statements or thoughts to be true. In order to stop these limiting beliefs one must reflect on where these thoughts came from in the first place and change their own reality so that they can move forward to a life unbound. This can be accomplished through many techniques such as meditation, self-reflection, and questioning the “norms” of our society. - The dictionary states pain as a noun, a sensation induced by a noxious stimula that is received by free nerve endings. It has been an accepted belief by many that when someone gets injured, pain receptors/nerve endings in the body produce pain and send a pain message (input) up to the brain. What if I told you that pain is actually NOT a noun or thing but rather an experience (output) produced by your brain? Think of the implications of this statement! I commonly use this example to my patients: imagine a time where you put your hand on a hot stove or surface without realizing that it was on or how hot it was and in that instant you had an insane amount of pain although there was no actual damage dealt to your hand. This experience was actually your brain using pain for the exact reason it was created which was to PROTECT your body from harm in the first place. If pain is not produced by the body but rather the brain, then that would mean that just because we get injured does not mean that we NEED to have pain. While it might not feel too great, pain after injury was actually designed to be a good thing by protecting us from further injuring or damaging ourselves. If you were to fracture your ankle and not know it, your brain should protect your body by producing pain so that you would not continue to walk on it more and cause further damage. While it may not be as easy as just thinking away the pain, the fact that pain is an experience created by the brain means that we DO have the power to influence this output. It is important that healthcare clinicians and society as a whole stop labeling pain as such a bad thing so that people do not fear pain so much, but rather learn why it’s there and how to better handle these experiences.
