As a Registered Dietitian I have an ethical and professional responsibility to give the latest nutrition recommendations for an optimal health status.

As a plant based Dietitian I have an extra layer of ethical and professional responsibility to share the latest findings even if the general recommendations have not caught up to todays real issues on topics that may not be talked about as often; the enviromental effect being a big one.

Wild caught fish get their omega 3s by consuming sea algea. Farm raised fish get fed grains that are not rich in omega 3's.

And this is where things get dicey, farm raised fish are given antibiotics to keep fish from developing diseases due to being so close in proximity to each other. Consumers are then getting those antibotics in their system which can potentially affect the microbiome (more on that on another post).

To top that off, contaminants like mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and pesticide residues have been found in farm raised fish.

Even worse, there are no current latest research on long term effects on this. Longitudinal studies are so important for us to really see long term effects, but guess what? they take time and many have to be performed in order to carry some weight to make future recommendations.

And there is also the fact that current fishing practices are killing our oceans and are far from being sustainable.

With that being said, when someone asks me if I recommend a mediterranean diet, I keep all this info in mind and really hope that some day we can have more substantial research on long term effects.

The truth about Omega 3s

We are often taught to consume fish to ensure we get enough omega 3s in our diets, but at what cost?

Plant based sources are not given enough credit as reliable sources of omega 3s.

That certainly needs to change as we are more than able to obtain our omega 3s from plant based sources.

We certainly do not need to consume fish in order to get enough omega 3s on a daily basis.

Let’s continue to learn better ways to get all our nutrients from plant based sources and help save our planet in the process.

Just like many other Women, I also struggled with weight gain, body issues and a good relationship with food.

I found myself with unwanted, undesired weight gain after both my pregnancies.

I thought the weight would come off after birth 🤷🏽‍♀️

That’s when my search for nutrition and fitness began.

I went through restrictive diets, over exercising, counting calories, to even skipping social events just so I don’t have to over consume calories.

🚫I restricted myself to the point I would consume the same 5 things over and over again just to stay below my calories.

🚫I worked out 2x/day because I thought that’s what I needed to do.

🚫I would see exercise as punishment for what ate.

🚫I even had cheat days! 😩

All those things are not good for you to say the least. And most importantly unnecessary to obtain desired weight loss.

✨These are some of the immediate things I learned while being a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist✨

✅ I learned to balance my meals and keep them delicious and interesting.

✅ I found exercise to be empowering with benefits that far outweigh any desired weight loss.

✅ Exercise became a way to maintain an optimal health status, and allow myself to have some me time. The weight loss became a bonus at that point.

✅ I no longer saw food as the enemy but rather an asset to my goals. Those so called cheat days became an embarrassing thing from the past. The way I look at it now is if you are in a good relationship where all your needs are met, why on earth would you need a cheat day. So working on that relationship with food is a must do first.

These are some basic foundations that my clients get to build on when working with me to achieve their nutrition and fitness goals.

Applying these principles become crucial to maintaining lifelong healthy habits.

This 12 week program is not meant to be followed and forgotten. It builds the foundation to a healthier happier you for the rest of your life without having to feel the need to follow another crazy diet even again.
