ACOG To Stop Accepting Federal Funding For All Programs
Axios (8/1, Goldman) reports that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists “is cutting financial ties with the federal government, citing...administration policies it says prevent it from providing evidence-based guidance.”

The decision “appears to be the first time a medical society has divested itself over conditions the administration has placed on government contractors and grant recipients.” In a statement, the college said, “Recent changes in federal funding laws and regulations significantly impact ACOG’s program goals, policy positions, and ability to provide timely and evidence-based guidance and recommendations for care.” It adds, “We remain fully committed to this critical work and will allocate our own resources to continue it in a way that is centered on patient needs and grounded in evidence.”

Today’s FDA panel on SSRIs in pregnancy lacked balance and failed to reflect the evidence. Untreated depression and anxiety can lead to serious health risks for pregnant patients. SSRIs can be lifesaving and life-changing. Patients deserve access to evidence-based, compassionate care. ACOG will continue to advocate for research and safe mental health treatment in pregnancy. ACOG is deeply disappointed by HHS’s decision to no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy. The science hasn’t changed, COVID-19 remains dangerous in pregnancy and vaccination protects both patients and newborns. We stand by the evidence: The vaccine is safe and protects families.
