Happy Fathers day to those celebrating today. .
Running is one of the many choices I made to try and be around and healthy in life for longer than Dad was.
It started that way, and I guess it's still a bit like that. But without a doubt I love this activity. And all it brings to my life.

It was a delight to be invited to be a part of 400+1 celebrations.
Typically they might have had a 400 event celebration, but last week was a snow day. And whilst whimsical and delightful, not overly comfortable in terms of having cookies, cake and a chat after. So at 401 we held our celebrations properly. With a cracking day and the winter course. Cookies almost weren't needed (but very suitable nonetheless)
Orange are a great gang to hang with for parkrun and typically gosling creek reserve puts on a show.
Go visit some time

Weak week.
Typically, I rest on a Monday (having long ran on Sunday)
If i'd known how Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons were going to go for personal time to run, I would have done something simple on Monday this week. .
But we cannot go backwards, it's only forwards. So in order to get myself across the virtual line for the weeks mileage I will have to adjust the pattern.
First things first, over the hurdle of suppressed motivation when things aren't going my way. .
And I'm pleased I did. The impromptu rest days are definitely noticeable once I start to warm up and the lungs are open.
Fingers crossed the rest of our week settles.

Strong
On a beautiful winters day, Portland has gifted us 19 degrees with a soft breeze.
An early mark from work and a good night's sleep meant I could take my body on a sunshine filled tempo run.
Essentially half up, half down a hill.
Recently I have begun to look at 'other ways' of bringing my running heart rate down without slowing down per se.
Things like form, breathing, variations on cadence and stride length.
I'm hoping anyone passing me on the way back down the hill would think, gee that bloke's looking strong and maybe even fast.
All while managing my heart to threshold still.
It felt like a good hit out, and as a sun-lover, the warm embrace of todays sun made all the more magical

Mount Panorama
in order or appearance

1) selfie at km 1, you've just come up about 40m in gain during that first km, starting to wonder about the wisdom of signing up to this one. But looking at a crest that appears to be salvation just up ahead.

2) the false sense of security the overhead sign crest gave you is now becoming a reality, with only 1.25km complete your next 750m or so is going to test you. You can see the hill, there's nothing for it. Let's get up here.

3) here you are. Possibly wondering where your next breath will come from. About halfway up the hardest km of the circuit. Take it easy on yourself. If this were trail running, you'd be walking this sort of gradient.

{side note, I stick to the middle of the road here or slightly on the "outside" of the track. it's a bit counter intuitive, but the gradient you're about to see at the 2k mark is the reason}

4) here we are at km 2, that's a steep bit you've just come up. Something slightly over a 1 in 10 climb for that latter part. And this is the corner where the roads camber and grade on the inside line is what I was looking to avoid in that last image.

{I tend to use a line just right of the center. But you really could take the whole outside line here. Again, seems weird but avoiding the camber and then subsequent grade on that corner is worth the extra metre or so you might run by doing so}

5) this is around Sulman Park, and for the most part, your hard climbing is done. Between here and the KOM you've still got about 10m of gain, but it's stretched out over a good distance. If you want my advice, try to recover your breathing and shake those arms and shoulders out. Don't back off the pace though. Its about to get fast, so you want to be ready.

6) here's the KOM at or around km 3, this is the peak, you've come up another 50m in that last km and that makes it about 180m so far. Well done you! Don't back off now though. If you remembered to recover a little from Sulman to here, you've every chance to start your fast. My PR's for km, mile and 2 mile have all gotten their start at the KOM line. Don't sacrifice the next 300m of road to backing off
the pace.

7) this is on the esses, and the second spot I don't recommend the inside line. Follow that middle path for a much easier grade and better options for running form happiness

8) this is km 4 and you're about to enter Conrod. From here on the grade is much more friendly and so you should be able to send it whilst still recovering. Go hard

9) towards the end of Conrod, there's a slight incline. As you motor on down, don't let your brain fool you into thinking this is a mountain. It's a molehill by comparison. 5 metres of gain in only 250m of running. It's an incline. I know you're tired. But making it more than it is in your head might slow you down unnecessarily

10) at the crest of that deceptive molehill, you are now at km 5 so you know how to run 1.2km right? Let's go

11) as you near the hotel there's another slight rise, I get it, you're even tireder than when I last described a molehill. But this one's for real a softie so don't let it get in the way of your final push. Only about 200 metres of gentle uphill for reals

12) is km 6, you can see the finish line and hear the crowd. Watch out for photography and get your best finish line grin going.

13) possibly the hardest molehill of them all, the rise to the finish line feels unjust and I've never quite forgiven the designer of the track. You're unstoppable now. So go at that line and look strong

choices
This week in my training plan I had a set of 800m repeats, six of them.
I chose to do them on an incline.
It was cold (8 degrees, feels like 3.5) and sleety rain with a breeze.
The "recovery" part of the exercise was to jog back down the hill.
Let me tell you, after a couple of these you start to question the choice you made. And the recovery time gives you plenty of opportunity to wonder about your sanity.
I could have stopped of course, at the top of any one of the intervals. But I didn't. I kept going.
Because I choose to try and be the best I can be for my fitness self. And sometimes that means doing hard things.

This year I'm going to crack myself up against the 10k and follow that with the 5k
It sits neatly in the training window for other things and is only a short walk from home.
If you were interested in trail running and wanted to see places in Portland that most won't get to see. Then sign up yourself and come say hello

On a whim this week I entered this year's
10km is my preferred distance.
There are times I think if we make targets too accessible for our current fitness level, the danger is you will meet it.
So I set myself a (much) harder goal and pushed myself close to burn out.
Set my personal 10k best and race best for the distance. On a pretty flat course in almost ideal conditions.
3rd in age, 9th overall and I'm only 2 months off being a new age category (where if I had ran same or similar, would have P1 for category assuming nothing else changed)
Age is not a barrier for my mind. I expect to continue to PR even as I get older. There's no shortcuts, it's just hard work.
A great day all in all

all the feels
It's Tuesday afternoon; you've finished work and home by midday, found out your youngest intends on visiting tomorrow night (so you've walked up the butchers for their best roast cut), been for what was a good session of running and now you're sitting in the warm afternoon sun knowing spring is just around the corner.
Days like these 🥰
