Hear about the life of a third year from Emily Otken!

Third year- the first time you truly feel like you are “practicing medicine.” Clinical rotations give you the opportunity to really step into the role of becoming a physician. Lots of early mornings and late nights, but somehow you make it through. You are there for your patients- observing some of the best moments of their lives as well as the worst. Some days are better than others and you begin to cherish the wins- the patient who said that you made them feel heard or the first time you were allowed to suture in the OR. Between the shifts, you still find time to give back through your interest groups and serve the community around you. You enjoy dancing the night away at Cadaver Ball and watching the fourth years at Match Day- knowing your turn is next. You figure out your specialty and realize that your medical school journey is closer to the end than it is to the beginning. You remember WHY you got into medicine in the first place.

Fourth year consists of the last chapter of a long journey. A journey that has been challenging in more ways than you expect, but rewarding in big and little moments the same. Fourth year is the time for students to pursue their specialties of interest. You can finally dive into the field you are passionate about, travel to different cities, see different hospitals and programs you might find yourself working inside one day very soon. You begin and end the process of haunting residency applications and too many interviews to count on two hands. Some take designated time to travel for missions or just for fun because you finally have time. Then, the big moments arrive. Match Day approaches and you find out where you will continue the pursuit of your dreams for the next several years. You start saying goodbyes to classmates you’ve survived with the last four years. Finally comes graduation, and when they call your name with DOCTOR attached to the front, there’s a little kid inside of you that jumps for joy because you did it. You made it. You’re a doctor. And it was all worth it.

A look into the life of a second year!

MS2 year has come and gone in the blink of an eye! We entered the year thinking we had the whole med school thing figured out. As the school year began, we plunged deeper into our didactic studies, building upon what we learned as MS1s, but twice as much and as fast as before. In the midst of all of our studies, we headed Camp Tiger/Geaux Bald/Pars for Peds, held leadership positions in almost every organization, and started doing research of so many different types, further establishing ourselves as part of the student body. We had so many fun events this past year outside of the classroom too, from our White Coat Ceremony to Cadaver Ball, we stayed busy. Throughout this year, we were able to grow closer together as classmates and friends both inside and outside of school. Even though we are all far apart right now as we study for STEP 1, it’ll be like we haven’t left each other when we return in July for clinicals as 50% doctors! See y’all in the hospital 🏥☺️

Human Trafficking Awareness Week! Here are some pictures from just one of the events put on by the Human Trafficking Awareness Week Committee, the HTAW Thrift Store! In order to support human trafficking victims, all funds raised by the store as well as left over clothes were donated to the HUB! Additionally, the committee put on a bake sale, a donation drive, had a speaker come to campus, helped out at the Heels Up 5k, and are hosting a self defense class today! Sign up link for the self defense class is in on our story!

On top of various donated items, the total raised for the week was $406!! 👏

Our next organization to highlight:

Geaux Bald is run by second-year medical students with a mission to raise money for the McDade House! The McDade House is a hospitality house for Feist-Weiller Cancer Center patients, as around half of our patient population has to travel over 20 miles for treatment. This critical resource will provide a low- to no-cost housing accommodation for these patients. At Geaux Bald, we believe that easing this financial burden will help patients be able to focus on what really matters — their health! We just finished up with our main event: SHAVE DAY! Students and faculty alike Braved the Shave and raised money through individual Shave Pages! We are so excited to have exceeded our fundraising goal this year by raising $50,000!!! This money will be going towards our pledge of $100,000 to sponsor a suite at the McDade House!

Geaux Bald is a tradition on LSUHS’s campus where everyone, independent of classification, is invited to participate in our events! If you are a first year medical student and interested in leading Geaux Bald, please consider applying here!! Applications close at midnight on Saturday, March 15th!!
