Welcome to my page for my mobile horse training service. My name is Melissa A. Hamer and my training service is called Desert Lily Horse Whispering & Training. I have been riding horses for about fifteen years, have been working directly with horses for just over four years, and have been training green and hand shy horses for roughly two years. I have over 500 hours of hands-on horse training experience thus far. I prefer natural horsemanship methods and ideas and I do not believe in the old-school ways of “breaking” a horse through fear or pain. I have been lucky enough to learn from Anna Twinney while she taught at a ranch I used to work on. I found we have many similar methods and beliefs when it comes to training. Desert Lily Horse Whispering & Training is a mobile service; there is no need to haul your horse, I will come to you!
I am just starting to offer my services publicly and my prices reflect that. However, I plan on keeping my prices on the low end for South Arizona so that I am able to be affordable for non-profit equine rescues, for organizations that offer discounts for such things as equine therapy, and for private owners who support rescues and adopt horses that are not fully trained and bomb-proof. Another reason for my lower prices is that I want to do things correctly and take my time. With the prices of trainers being up to, and sometimes, over double what I charge, it’s not surprising an owner would expect great results in a short period of time. But when this does not happen because of improper training, because of a trainer handing the horse off to an assistant instead of working the horse himself, because the horse is especially untrusting or hand shy, etc. many owners give up and say the horse is not able to be tamed or trained. I have seen too many horses being thrown away, auctioned off, or put out to pasture just because they were not given the proper training, patience, and love. My goal is to correct this growing trend and show that with the correct methods, any horse can be trained to ride.
