It’s not easy to look in the mirror and see all your imperfections in a loving, accepting light. Especially when society shoves their idea of what perfection looks like down our throats. I’ve felt a shift in the past few years though...more amazing humans celebrating their beautiful bodies in all different shapes and sizes. I’ve seen companies embracing this positive movement and it makes my heart smile. 🥰🤗💖

Do you even rest bro? Our society seems to be stuck on the fast forward button these days - we are expected to work long hours, often without taking breaks, and when we get home we end up over-committed to family and social demands. We pack our schedules so full that we cut our sleep short in order to fit it all in and pump ourselves full of stimulants to keep ourselves going. The idea of slowing down can sometimes feel almost impossible, it can be hard to even imagine taking time for ourselves to sit and enjoy a quiet moment in our chaotic lives.

There's an old adage that goes "I'll sleep when I'm dead" - but who wants to speed up that process!?!? 😳😬👻

Lack of rest causes a host of negative physical reactions in the body but most importantly, when you are sleep-deprived your brain loses it's ability to perform. Studies have shown that losing a single night of rest has about the same effect on cognitive function as reaching the legal limit of alcohol! Your concentration, decision making skills, and even your memory are impaired. 🤯🧟‍♀️

When you don't rest, you become less capable of handling stress as well...being in a constant state of fight or flight leads to hormonal imbalances, mental health issues, adrenal exhaustion, and illness, all of which accelerate the aging process. 🚫

When you take the time to sit and rest, even for just a few minutes every day, you give your body the time it needs to recharge and recover, activating it's natural ability to bring itself back into balance. This is why meditation, mindfulness and breath-work are so powerful. 🧘‍♀️✨

The core foundation of loving yourself is rooted in self-care. Self-care is defined as 'the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress'.

Self-care can sometimes be viewed as a selfish act, especially by women, who feel guilty for taking time for themselves in a world where external demands are constant. This couldn't be farther from the truth...giving too much of yourself to everyone around you without taking time to recharge leaves you feeling depleted and burned out. It's even what they tell you on airplanes before takeoff...in case of emergency, put your own mask on first!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we take deliberate and consistent actions to make ourselves a priority, we have so much more energy to give to our loved ones, our coworkers and our community. Self-care has also been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mental health. It is a necessary part of a balanced life.
