The Power of Slowing Down: Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
This month, I’ve been reminded in a big way how essential it is to slow down and care for ourselves. I recently took a vacation, thinking it would replenish me — yet when I came home, I found myself more exhausted than I expected. It became clear how much of my energy is spent caring for others, worrying about others, and tending to what’s around me.
Even the kindest, most giving hearts need to refuel. It’s easy to forget that constantly being “on” — physically, mentally, and emotionally — drains our inner reserves. True self-care isn’t just bubble baths and walks (though those are wonderful); it’s giving ourselves permission to pause, rest, and receive.
Why the Nervous System Needs Rest
Our nervous system is like the command center for our body. When we’re in a constant state of doing or caring for others, we often live in a subtle “fight or flight” mode — even when we don’t feel outwardly stressed. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, tension, and a sense of disconnection from ourselves.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) helps gently guide the body out of this state. Through light, intentional touch, BCST supports the nervous system in finding balance — shifting from “doing” into “being.” Many people describe it as feeling like their body finally exhales.
It’s a profound form of self-care because it allows the body’s innate healing intelligence to reset — without effort or force.
…And YES, I did book myself a BCST Session because I realized I needed to put on my own oxygen mask before I could continue to care for others.
The Flight Attendant Analogy
We’ve all heard it before: “Put your own oxygen mask on first.”
It’s not just a cliché — it’s a truth rooted in physiology.
When our own system is regulated and resourced, we have more genuine capacity to care for those around us. When we’re depleted, even our best intentions can come from a place of strain rather than presence.
Receiving BCST is one way to put your own oxygen mask on. It’s a time to receive, to slow your internal rhythm, and to reconnect with your body’s natural ease. It’s also a time to let yourself be nurtured for once instead of always being the nurturer!
Gentle Self-Care practices for Home
Here are a few small ways you can nurture your nervous system in daily life:
💫 Take small pauses: Even one minute of slow breathing with your hand over your heart can bring your system back into balance.
🌿 Simplify where possible: Let go of one unnecessary “to-do” today — and notice how your body feels when you do.
🌙 Ground through the senses: Step outside, feel your feet on the earth, listen, breathe, and notice your surroundings.
🕯️ Prioritize restorative rest: True rest happens when we feel safe. Create small rituals before sleep — soft music, dim lights, or gentle stretches.
A Note From My Heart:
If you’ve been feeling depleted, disconnected, or like you’ve been running on empty — you’re not alone. This season is an invitation to slow down, come home to yourself, and allow your nervous system to recalibrate.
BCST offers a space for your body to rest, release, and remember its natural state of balance.
You don’t have to carry it all alone…I’me here, and I’ve got you!! Book your next session today!
