Learning to manage our emotions can be challenging. Here are some ways to improve our ability to regulate our emotions.

•Sharing our stories, thoughts, and feelings with safe people.

•Implementing daily relaxation techniques.

•Practice captivating, evaluations, and renovating our thoughts.

•Group therapy or being in a life group.

•Develop more self-compassion.

•Develop more self awareness.

Emotional-Regulation is the ability to regulate or control our emotions. This doesn’t mean we never “lose it” or that our emotions are appropriate in timing and intensity. Rather, if we are emotionally regulated, we are able to keep our emotions under control and socially appropriate most of the time.

Emotional-Regulation is very important for our overall mental health, and healthy relationships.

We will take some time to discuss this important topic.

The three main life-style measures that can help lower depression are:
Healthy Nutrition
Physical Exercise
Good Sleep

I have written about these in detail in my book, Victory Over Anxiety (link in bio).

Regular exercise, and good nutrition and sleep are all essential for our mental health.

Some other activities that can help lower depression are relaxation techniques, mindfulness, journaling, fun activities, and self-care to name a few.

Antidepressants are a popular treatment for depression. They do not necessarily cure depression but they can reduce symptoms. There are several types of antidepressants. It is important to discuss with your doctor your specific symptoms, and what the side effects are for the antidepressant your doctor recommends.

Common side effects are:
•nausea
•weight gain
•reduced s*x drive
•fatigue
•suicidal ideation (people under 25)

I encourage those who decide to take medication for depression that they also participate in therapy. The goal is to not only lower symptoms but to develop skills to combat the depression and prevent relapse.

Only a medical doctor, preferably a psychiatrist, can prescribe antidepressants.
