This exercise, Iron Cross Lunge, focuses on improving posture and alignment by engaging the shoulders, hips, and legs.🦵

Follow these steps:

- Stand with feet pointed straight and hip-width apart
- Lift arms straight out to sides at shoulder height, with palms facing down for 1/2 the time
- Shoulder blades should stay squeezed together (do not shrug)
- Then rotate from shoulders so palms face up for remaining 1/2 of the time
- Take a big step forward with one foot (keeping both feet pointed straight ahead)
- Drop the hips straight down as the forward knee and the back knee bends
- Do Not initiate the movement by letting the front knee lean forward past the ankle
- Keep bending until the front knee is directly over the ankle and the back knee is almost touching the floor - hold for 60 seconds.

We need to look at the whole body, addressing any issues in the hips, torso, and shoulders. The body moves with an opposite arm-to-leg swing, so a problem in the shoulder or arm can affect how the knee functions. A common issue is hip rotation, which causes the knee to rotate rather than work as a proper hinge joint, impacting heel strike and hip strength. Instead of flexing forward, the knee rotates, compromising the joint.

Even with conditions like arthritis or bone-on-bone issues, it's crucial to understand why they occur. Often, overloading one side of the body due to weakness on the other is what leads to knee problems.

Here is another great exercise for you today called Hanging.

- Stand with feet hip width and parallel to each other (do not let them splay out)
- Slowly allow upper body and arms and head to bend forward and hang down reaching towards toes and floor
- Concentrate on exhaling, feeling body sink further to floor on each exhale
- Keep weight evenly balanced from right to left and front to back of feet
- Try to keep knees all the way straight, do not let them bend
- Take time as you return to upright position, since head rush can occur if standing up too fast.

If you spend a lot of time on your computer or phone, this one's perfect for you!

Forearm Stretch:

- Stand facing the wall with feet straight about 12" away from the wall
- Place palms on the wall with fingers spread apart and middle finger pointed directly to the floor
- Forearms should now be perpendicular to the wall
- Relax shoulders down as they will tend to shrug
- Lean body into the wall, allowing shoulder blades to squeeze together
- Do not allow hips to sway into the wall. Keep them back in line with the shoulders, knees, and ankles
- Hold for 60 seconds

When addressing knee pain, it's crucial to remember that the knee is an extension of the hip. We must consider the entire body, ensuring that any issues in the hips, torso, and even shoulders are addressed. A common problem we often see is a rotated hip that pulls the knee out of alignment, causing the knee to rotate instead of functioning properly as a hinge joint with a correct heel strike.

This rotation compromises the knee joint, leading to further issues. That’s why it’s essential to look at the whole body, even if there’s an arthritic condition or a diagnosis like bone-on-bone contact. We must understand why that’s happening by examining how the body is interconnected. Often, an overloaded side of the body compensates for a weaker side, leading to a compromised knee.

So, keep this in mind during all exercises—we’re working on the entire body here, always aiming to treat the cause, not just the symptoms. That’s what makes PTX therapy so effective. 💪

The sitting elbow twist shown in the image is a seated exercise that helps promote the extension of the upper back, improving your posture and preventing slouched shoulders.

Steps to Perform a Sitting Elbow Twist in a Chair:

1. Start in a Seated Position:
* Sit on a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight.
* Place your hands behind your head, elbows pointing outward.
2. Twist Your Torso to the Right:
* Inhale deeply, lengthening your spine. As you exhale, slowly twist your torso to the right.
* Keep your elbows wide and your chest open, rotating from your waist without moving your hips.
3. Hold the Position:
* Gaze over your right shoulder and hold the position for 3-5 seconds, continuing to breathe deeply.
* Focus on maintaining a straight back and keeping your feet firmly planted on the floor.
4. Return to the Center and Switch Sides:
* Inhale as you slowly untwist and return to the center.
* Exhale as you twist to the left side, repeating the same steps and holding the position for another 3-5 seconds.
5. Repeat:
* Perform the twist 3-5 times on each side, alternating between right and left.

Incorporating this sitting elbow twist into your daily routine will help you maintain an extended upper back and upright posture.

Become pain free now via any mobile device, tablet, or computer. We are distinguished experts in functional biomechanics, gait analysis and kinetics (physics), and orthopedic rehabilitation linking posture to pain.

The PTX Therapy™ methodology is an approach to treating a wide variety of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. Instead of the typical “band-aid” approach used to mask symptoms in traditional physical therapy, or chiropractic or massage, or through harmful / toxic meds and invasive surgeries, PTX gives you exactly what you need to heal yourself of muscle & joint pain. The “virtual therapist” intelligence designs home-based therapy programs for you to follow along. Each video exercise and position helps you discover new balance, new posture, and a new pain-free life.
