Such important work being done!
Today Amanda and Amy had the opportunity to present at PACI about consent, online safety, and healthy digital boundaries to the entire student body, alongside the RCMP Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit.
These conversations are incredibly important. Young people are navigating an online world where messages, images, and interactions can change very quickly, and where situations can escalate faster than many adults realize. Our goal today was not only to share information, but to help students understand how to protect themselves and how to respond if something online ever feels uncomfortable or unsafe.
The most important message we hope students took away today is simple:
Always talk to a trusted adult.
That trusted adult might be a parent, caregiver, teacher, coach, mentor, school social worker, family member, or another safe adult in their life. What matters most is that young people know there is someone who will listen, support them, and help them navigate difficult situations.
Connection is one of the strongest protective factors we can offer youth. When students feel safe and supported by the adults around them, they are far more likely to ask questions, seek help, and speak up if something doesn’t feel right online.
Creating spaces where young people feel comfortable reaching out, and where trusted adults are present and approachable, helps ensure that concerns are addressed early and that students know they deserve to feel safe both online and offline.
Thank you to the students and staff at PACI for your thoughtful participation today, and to the RCMP ICE Unit for partnering in this important conversation. Together, we can continue working to keep young people safe in the digital world.
