This protocol finally provides researchers in the nitric oxide field with a true, step-by-step guide to the gold-standard NO analysis once limited to specialized NO laboratories.

✅ Standardized and ICH M10-aligned, this method is a game changer—a validated, cost-effective alternative to the widely used Griess assay.

✅ Enables reproducible quantification of NO metabolites in serum, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid.

✅ Supports direct measurement of NO release kinetics and compound half-life.

✅ Expands the role of nitric oxide as a biomarker in cardiology, neurology, oncology, and asthma control—empowering its use to guide clinical decision-making.

This standardized approach opens the door for broader clinical and translational adoption of NO metabolite analysis, uniting research and diagnostics under one reproducible platform.

💔 Women’s heart symptoms are too often dismissed. Chest pain? “It’s just stress.” Fatigue? “Probably PMS.” Shortness of breath? “You’re fine.”
But what if it’s not fine? What if it’s microvascular disease (MVD)—a condition that takes an average of 3 years to diagnose in women because doctors overlook it?

In my latest blog, I explore why women’s heart health continues to be misdiagnosed, why the gold-standard test (heart cath with acetylcholine challenge) matters, and how women can advocate for themselves when symptoms are ignored.

Did you know that half the world’s population carries a stomach bug that can cause ulcers, anemia, and even cancer? 🤔

It’s called H. pylori, and most people don’t even know they have it. The surprising part? Routine screening in primary care is still rare — even when patients have chronic stomach issues.

In my latest Biochemist Knows Best blog, I dive into why this matters, what the risks are, and why asking your doctor about a simple test could make all the difference.

🌟 Publication Announcement 🌟

I’m excited to share that our new research has been published in Anticancer Research! https://ar.iiarjournals.org/content/45/9/3629

Our team including Annette M. Sysel, DVM, MS, Michael Dunphy, Ph.D. and myself... investigated SCC5, a silver-based compound, as a potential alternative to traditional platinum chemotherapy drugs (such as cisplatin). Platinum drugs have saved countless lives, but they are often limited by serious side effects. In contrast, SCC5 showed:

✅ Strong activity against several types of cancer cells (melanoma, colon, ovarian, prostate, and more)

✅ A significantly better safety profile in preclinical testing

✅ Evidence of triggering natural cell death pathways in cancer cells

This work highlights how silver, long known for its healing properties, may play an important role in the future of cancer therapy.

💡 A huge thank you to the reviewers and editorial team for their thoughtful insights, and to the institutions that made this work possible:

Nitric Oxide Services, LLC (Akron, OH)

Bauer Research Foundation(Akron, OH)

Walsh University (North Canton, OH)

And a special tribute to The University of Akron especially Dr. Wiley J. Youngs, whose pioneering work in silver carbene chemistry paved the way for this study.

We are only at the beginning, but this is a promising step forward in developing safer, more effective cancer treatments.

🚀 New Publication Alert! 🚀

Looking back on 25+ years since earning my doctorate in biochemistry, if I had to pick one assay that has truly defined my career, it would be the Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay. This robust, versatile method verified the anticancer activity of a compound I synthesized—nitrosylcobalamin—and laid the foundation for a landmark publication in the JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The SRB assay has been at the core of my teaching and mentoring, helping train countless students at both university and high school levels. It has allowed me to share the excitement of anticancer research with students, educators, and colleagues alike. Special recognition to Dr. Amy Heston, who trained several outstanding students at Walsh University, leading to published studies on the effects of copper and heavy metals on various human cancer cell lines.

I'm proud to share that we have now published a detailed, step-by-step guide to the SRB assay, making it accessible to educators and research labs everywhere. Our hope is that this protocol will empower more teams to screen both natural and synthetic compounds for anticancer activity, expanding the arsenal in the fight against cancer.

🚨 BREAKTHROUGH in Feline Medicine! 🚨

A brand new study by Kunath et al. (2024) published in the MDPI open access journal Veterinary Sciences MDPI has validated the first reliable method to measure serum transcobalamin (TC) in cats—a game-changer for understanding vitamin B12 (cobalamin) metabolism in our feline friends. Their findings? Cats with chronic gastrointestinal diseases often have disrupted B12 transport, which could impact everything from gut health to cancer risk.

Why should pet owners and doctors care?

The same B12 pathways that matter for your cat also matter for YOU.

Both pets and people can be deficient even with “normal” blood B12—so looking at TC, homocysteine (HCY), and methylmalonic acid (MMA) tells the real story.

Chronic disease, cancer, and nutrition are shared challenges across species.

🐾 We share the same environment—shouldn’t we also share what we learn?

🔗 Check out my latest blog to see how this feline study and our own Oncotarget research are reshaping B12 testing for both pets and people—embracing the One Health approach to improve health for all.

🐾 Is veterinary care becoming a financial crisis for pet owners? 🐾

As veterinary costs soar, countless families face heartbreaking decisions between their pet’s health and financial stability. Routine vet visits now range from $50 to $250, with emergencies easily reaching $5,000—placing significant strain on budgets.

It's time for action through the "One Health" Initiative. We need government-backed solutions—like Pet Health Savings Accounts (PHSAs), tax incentives for pet insurance, and financial assistance programs—to make veterinary care accessible and affordable for everyone.

No one should have to consider euthanasia because of financial stress. Our pets deserve better, and so do we.

👉 Read more about this important issue and potential solutions in my latest blog post: https://thebiochemistknowsbest.com/f/keeping-our-pets-healthy-time-for-a-one-health-financial

Let's start the conversation—our pets depend on it! 🐶🐱🐴

🐾 Why do we have different standards for nurses caring for humans versus animals?

In human medicine, nurses are rigorously trained, licensed, and empowered to drive patient care and clinical research. Yet, veterinary technicians, who perform similarly vital roles for animals, often lack comparable professional recognition, standardized training, or opportunities for advancement.

Imagine the possibilities if veterinary technicians were elevated to licensed veterinary nurses—with education, licensure, and research involvement parallel to human nurses. Not only would this raise the bar for veterinary care, but it would also strengthen our collective efforts in One Health, enhancing collaboration across animal, human, and environmental health sectors.

In my latest blog, I discuss the critical need for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and veterinary school accreditation bodies to take action, transforming veterinary technician programs into formal, accredited veterinary nursing degrees. Let’s bridge the gap and set a new, unified standard for healthcare excellence—one that values animals and humans equally.

🚨 Life-saving Emergency Protocol: Time to Change the Standard of Care! 🚨

Did you know there’s a safe, non-toxic, inexpensive antidote for cyanide poisoning from smoke inhalation that is still not universally administered in emergency settings?

I'm sharing a critical evidence-based update highlighting hydroxocobalamin (Vitamin B12a)—backed by more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific studies on PubMed—as the antidote of choice. This proven approach should be standard operating procedure (SOP) for humans and animals alike, embracing a vital One Health perspective, especially crucial given the recent increase in catastrophic wildfires.

It's time we bridge the gap between science and practice to save more lives. Check out my latest blog post to learn why immediate adoption is imperative: https://thebiochemistknowsbest.com/f/saving-lives-from-smoke-and-cyanide-poisoning

Saving Lives from Smoke and Cyanide Poisoning: Hydroxocobalamin as Standard Emergency Care for Humans and Animals (A One Health Imperative)
