🌟A high-quality picture book is the way to my SLP heart🌟
• Shout out to my graduate intern for finding this gem and continuing our friendship theme this week!💕😍
• This book is perfect for our K-2 kids and is a quick, easy read with the sweetest ending.
• In speech you can target story grammar, WH questions, passive voice comprehension, tons of tier 1 vocab with a handful of tier 2 words. Use a KWL chart to elicit background knowledge and expand on the book! Talk about friendships, feelings, and problem solving!
• Thankful for for housing all the research based activities for book like these that I can use in a flash!⚡️

•I got to sit in as a judge for the fourth year in a row for our 6th grade Shark Tank presentations.🦈
•This is always such a fun experience and I love that I get to see some of my students up there presenting.🥹
•Public speaking is tough for even the best communicator, so to see them stand up there in front of a panel of adults is really inspiring!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

• As a school SLP, I am not doing myofunctional therapy and treating tongue thrust swallows, but I am doing articulation therapy and teaching kiddos about correct lingual placement!
• Sometimes I find myself being one of the first people to talk to parents about their child’s tongue thrust. I also have a handful of students with palate expanders or who are seeing a certified myofunctional therapist.
• I dug up some research (there isn’t much) on tongue thrust swallows and created a handy handout to share with parents in hopes it gives them a reference on a wholistic treatment plan!

• I love using it with older students to work on vocabulary, syntax, and morphology!
• I took over PreK-3rd grade so I miss using this with upper elementary students, but if you need a good activity to use with no prep, try this on a white board!

“My insurance deductible renews soon and I’d prefer not to pay for speech.”
😅😅😅
•Totally get it. Private therapy is a commitment, expensive, and can be inconvenient. But our role in the school setting is not to be used as a fallback because of the reasons above.
•School speech therapy is completely different than private speech therapy!
•We have to determine if there is an educational impact that limits their ability to access their curriculum. Not being able to say the /th/ sound in Kinder is likely not a reason to qualify for skilled speech services.
•Sometimes all it takes is explaining this to parents and teachers and creating more knowledge around this subject.
•School speech ⛔️ private speech.
