Worried about funding med school? You're not alone—and we’re here to help.

Recent federal changes are placing tighter caps on student loans for aspiring doctors. Starting July 1, 2026, most medical students will be limited to $50,000 per year in federal loans, with a lifetime cap of $200,000—well below the $200,000 median debt most students currently carry (Chicago Tribune, Aug. 4, 2025).

This shift comes as the physician shortage continues to grow, with the U.S. projected to be short as many as 86,000 doctors by 2036 (AAMC, March 2024).

💡 The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society is here to help. We offer scholarships and loans to eligible medical students in PA so you can stay focused on your future—not your finances.

A few weeks ago, Peer Assistance Monitoring Intake Coordinator Melissa Devonshire had the opportunity to attend the National Organization of Alternative Programs (NOAP) 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In reflection of the experience, Melissa shared, "The NOAP conference was extremely educational, not only because of the information provided but because of the interaction with other state programs. It was intriguing to hear the other opinions and thoughts of programs, and how we are similar and yet so different on certain policies. The part I found most profound was the personal stories of not only the speakers, but also those in the audience. I have a new respect for what we all do and the specific population we serve."

In April, LifeGuard Director Tracey Ziegler traveled to Seattle, WA for the 2025 Federation of State Medical Board (FSMB) conference! The FSMB provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with leaders in medical regulation, allowing for important discussions on policy innovation and physician accountability. ⚕️

The conference was also an excellent opportunity for networking, collaboration, and exploring emerging trends that are shaping the future of medical licensure and discipline. Thank you FSMB!

Pennsylvania is being recognized as a Wellbeing First Champion, which means that Pennsylvania's licensing applications for Medical Physician and Surgeon and Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon are free from overly broad and invasive mental health questions.

Congratulations to those who have worked so hard for this change! Thank you to past president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Dr. Kristen Sandel, for her platform last year and efforts to bring this to fruition.

As a nationally recognized Wellbeing First Champion, Pennsylvania sends a clear message to its current and future workforce that both the Board of Medicine and the Osteopathic Board of Medicine supports mental health and well-being for its licensees.

💙 Caring for those who care for us. 💙

In November 2023, the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society launched the Nurses’ Health Program (NHP) — a vital resource created to support nurses, dietitian-nutritionists, and student nurses facing challenges related to mental health, substance use, and behavioral concerns.

Every day, these professionals show up for others. Now, there’s a place they can turn to when they need support themselves.
🧠 Mental health and substance use disorders are not signs of weakness — they are medical conditions that deserve care and compassion.

Through partnership with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Professional Health Monitoring Programs (PHMP), NHP provides a path forward rooted in hope, healing, and professional integrity.

💙 They care for others. We care for them. 💙

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on the Physicians’ Health Program (PHP) — a lifeline for healthcare professionals navigating mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or behavioral concerns.

🌱 Why we exist:

To ensure no health care professional has to walk the path to recovery alone. Through early intervention, treatment coordination, and long-term support, we help preserve careers, protect public safety, and promote healing. Since the 1970s, PHP has stood as a pillar of hope — built on the belief that healing is possible and stigma has no place in medicine.
