The nutrition guidance that many of us are familiar with is not necessarily right for older people, due to various factors that influence health as we age.
The University of Plymouth has led an evidence review that underpins new guidance for older adults, recently published by the British Dietetic Association (BDA). diet and nutrition guidance for older adults.
Some of the key topics identified as being important for this age group included maintaining body weight, with weight loss not being appropriate for those that are slightly overweight; getting enough of certain nutrients; vitamin D supplementation; realistic levels of activity needed alongside nutrition; and the vital importance of enjoying what and how you eat.
Hydration is high on the list of considerations for older people too, as recognising the feeling of thirst is not as obvious as we get older. All fluids count, not just water.

1 in 4 people over 65 in Cornwall experience a fall each year. This rises to 1 in 2 for people over 80! BUT falling is NOT an inevitable part of ageing. So Alex and Mike joined us today for day four of the Ageing Well Education and Coaching Programme to talk about falls assessment and how we can integrate behaviour change and reablement/reconditioning into a preventative approach to ageing well. Thanks to Alex, Mike and our wonderful cohort of clinicians who are taking part. They include physiotherapists, community support workers, dementia practitioners, nurses (RMNs and RNs) and occupational therapists...all learning with and from each other.

Every person in a position to influence the direction of our healthcare system should watch this recent presentation by Prof Chris whitty. Unlike most of our politicians, he presents the FACTS and gives us clear scientifically based guidance on how the NHS should be planning for a sustainable future. The takeaway message is that the NHS won't be able to recruit its way out of it, nor treat its way out of it.
