Idyllic Funerals

Idyllic Funerals Idyllic Funerals offers personalised, heartfelt celebrations of life in Sydney. I’m Matt Morgan, a Sydney-based funeral director and celebrant.

Partnered with Picaluna, we create tailored funeral and memorial services including burial and cremation options to honour each individual's life. I want to redefine how to say goodbye to your loved one. I worked in financial services for over 20 years until the loss of a dear friend inspired me to explore a more fulfilling path. I am passionate about helping others find comfort and meaning during difficult times. By offering personalised, heartfelt farewells, my aim is to not only change the way funerals are done, but also enrich lives in a profound and lasting way.

What is vigiling?

It’s the time spent with a loved one after they’ve died, before transfer into care or funeral arrangements begin.

For some families, it may be a few quiet hours. For others, longer.

It’s a moment that often gets overlooked, but can be one of the most meaningful parts of the process.

I’ve written a guide explaining what vigiling is, including cultural perspectives and options available in NSW.

Every farewell is different….

Yesterday we honoured the life of a young man, and one moment that stood out was the decision to have an open casket at the cemetery. In more than 30 years of experience, our hearse driver said he had never seen that before.

There is no single way to say goodbye. What matters most is that the farewell reflects the person and the people who loved them 🩵

So much of life moves quickly.

Moments like this are a quiet reminder of the value of slowing down, noticing what’s around us, and simply being present.

If you ever have questions about planning ahead or navigating loss, I’m always here for a conversation.

When someone dies, the first 24 hours can feel overwhelming.

There are practical steps, yes - but there is often more time and flexibility than people realise. In NSW, families may have the option to keep a loved one at home for a period of time before arranging transfer into care.

Understanding what actually happens in those first hours can remove unnecessary panic.

I’ve written a clear, practical guide on the blog for anyone who may find it helpful: https://idyllicfunerals.com.au/the-first-24-hours-after-someone-dies/

I recently completed Death Walker training with Zenith Virago from the National Death Care Centre during her time in Sydney.

The three days focused on what is possible before, during and after death, including home care options, slowing down the process, and the importance of having your Will, Advance Care Directive, Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship in place.

One of the key reminders was that there is often more choice available than people realise.

I’ve shared a reflection on the experience on the blog for anyone interested 🙏

In case we haven't met, here is a little more about me:

I’m Matt. Marrickville has been my home for the past four years, and I’m a funeral director and celebrant with Idyllic Funerals.

People often describe me as an all-or-nothing type of person. When it comes to my work, that’s very true, I’m all in. There is nothing I love more than supporting families through some of their hardest, and often most profound moments.

When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me on the jiu jitsu mats or in the sauna, or listening to podcasts and comedy - all things that help keep me grounded.

This work is about listening, presence, and meeting people where they are. I feel incredibly grateful to do something that never feels like just a job.

Choosing a coffin can feel like a big decision, especially when you’re navigating everything else that comes with loss.

There’s often far more choice than people expect, and understanding the options can make things feel much calmer. I’ve written a new blog covering coffin vs casket, eco and traditional options, pricing, and how to choose what feels right.

You can read the full blog here: https://idyllicfunerals.com.au/how-to-choose-the-right-coffin/

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a funeral director or celebrant, The Funeral Fix courses are fantastic. They were my formal introduction to the industry and I can't recommend them enough.

How do you choose the right coffin?

It’s a question many families ask, and one that often comes with more options than expected. From simple and sustainable choices to more traditional designs, there’s far more flexibility than people realise.

Next week, I’ll be sharing a more in-depth look at coffin options and what to consider. There’s so much more than meets the eye.
