🙌 Posted • "Birth is about so much more than the wriggling of a tiny body out of a larger one.

When we birth, we don't just birth babies. We birth ourselves, we birth our families and we reshape our lives."

That's one of the most-quoted lines in my book, 'What's Right For Me? Making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth.'

Birth is a journey, and I wrote this book in the hope that it would help women and families to consider what is important for them on that journey.

I wanted to share some of the tools and ideas which can help point the way.

Because the modern world is complex. It's important that we understand how our culture shapes the different options that are available, and how our decisions are affected by the beliefs, experiences and perceptions of ourselves and others.

We need to understand how the idea of risk can affect us and how we can think about decisions clearly, even when things are happening quickly.

There is no one right way, and there's certainly no way that will work for everyone.

What's important is to take the time to ponder the options and decide what path to head on.

No-one can guarantee exactly where it will lead, and that's part of the experience of the journey of birth, but you can decide where you'll begin, who your companions will be and what you want to take with you.

Happy journeying.

Your body is always listening to your mind. Everything the body does is impacted by the mind, either consciously or unconsciously - so taking the time to mentally prepare can change the course of your experience.

This formed the basis of our discussions in Daisy Birthing last night - understanding the power of preparation, switching your conscious brain off and listening to your body, allowing it to do what it is designed to do!

Is there any parent out there who hasn't been told by someone at some stage that they need to get their baby in a strict routine for feeding and sleep? That they should let their baby cry, stretch out feeds or not pick them up so much?

There are a number of (very well selling) books that promote the idea that you can train your baby to be a 'good' baby who sleeps all night and doesn't wake up. These types of books tend to promote very strict routines rather than more gentle or gradual methods that work around your baby whilst still keeping that responsive connection. The question is though - do they work? And how do they make parents feel?

A few years ago we did some research on that very question and found that although strict routines did seem to work for a small number of babies. This is most likely in some cases because those babies were leaning naturally towards a routine or were on the verge of becoming a bit more settled anyway.

How in most cases they didn't and often left mothers feeling more stressed, frustrated and miserable than when they started. Why? Because they fight everything to do with normal baby behaviour - in fact, adult behaviour too. Who of us eats and sleeps in a perfect routine and never finds comfort sleeping close to someone at night?

But babies are tiny with more frequent needs - alongside an inbuilt survival instinct to get those needs met. They have tiny tummies and shorter sleep cycles and are calmed by contact and reassurance.
Training babies fights all of this so often doesn't work.

But you can understand why parents try - they're exhausted and probably doing it on their own. It's not one big either / or though. There are gentler ways to encourage your baby to get the best possible sleep for them that can be effective.

But mostly we need a culture which also supports, protects and values new parents better through those exhausting months rather than suggesting something that doesn't work and can leave them feeling even more exhausted.
