We have just received our charity daffodil box for Marie Curie, so if you are looking for one to brighten up your jacket (a wee reminder that spring is on it's way 🐰🐣🐥🐑🪺🌸🌻🌞), please feel free to pop in or if you are coming in for an appointment or just to make one, if you have any spare change please bring it with you as I'm sure you will agree that this is a very worthy charity to support!
Now Just a wee update after almost getting to the end of our first week with our permanent dentist being here and what a difference it has made! All happy in here 🥳
We are making check up appointments into July/Aug time but can see you sooner if you have any concerns. The wait time will even itself out once we get through this initial backlog that we are addressing at the moment.
We are trying to have everyone's mobile number or email address on record so you receive a text reminder and a link to a medical history form to which we would ask you to do complete prior to your appointment. If you are unable to complete it you can fill one out on paper when you come in.
You still have to complete the medical history form even if you have been to the practice before.
We are hoping by the end of the summer we will be able to take on new patients again also.

Again as always thank you all for your support and understanding recently, You have all been the best! We are so happy to have turned a corner and be up and running again! We also feel so lucky to have a dentist due to the national shortage at the moment but we have got there! I'm sure you are all with me when i say a big welcome to West Kilbride Isabel Saunderson, the practice with the best patients around, we know you will be really happy here and we are all glad to have you! 🤗

Festive update...
Christmas week
This is always such a busy time and as we are short at the moment it's been even worse this year. We would ask where possible not to phone now if you have lost a filling which isn't sore as we are struggling to have these seen out with the practice before Santa comes🎅 . Temporary filling kits are available from amazon or supermarkets and can be really useful.
Hopefully into new year we will have more days open, so if you are due a routine check up please call mid January and we should by then have a better idea of when we can book you in.
On Tuesday 19th Dec, please only call if you have severe pain, bleeding or swelling and leave a message on the answering machine and i will call you back over lunchtime as i will be unable to answer the phone during surgery hours.. If you can wait until Wednesday please call then instead.
I will also be unable to answer the phone on Thursday 21st between 10am and 1pm, again, please only leave a message if you have acute pain, if you are having pain please try call before 9.45 where possible.
We will be closed over Christmas and New year reopening on Monday 8th Jan but again, if you have severe pain, bleeding or swelling please phone us and the answering machine will give all emergency details for during this period.
So now I've said all of that! I hope you all have the best Christmas and New Year, thank you all again for all your support and understanding recently and lets hope Santa brings West Kilbride some more dentists on more days in the New Year!

CHANGES TO THE FEE SCALE FROM WED 1ST NOV FOR YOUR INFORMATION.
Thanks as always for you continued support and understanding as we are working through the waiting list of treatments and have postponed exams until new year unless you have an issues and we can see you sooner, Libby

What do you receive as an NHS patient?
Everyone is entitled to a comprehensive range of NHS treatment, advice and care you need to keep your teeth, mouth and gums as healthy as possible. Your dentist will explain which treatments are available on the NHS and which are private to allow you to make an informed decision about your treatment and to understand related costs.
Treatments that you can receive on the NHS include:
• bridges
• crowns
• fillings
• root canal treatment
• preventive advice and treatment for gum disease
• orthodontic braces (according to strict criteria)
• extractions (tooth removal)
• dentures or false teeth
Cosmetic procedures will usually need to be paid for privately.
Childsmile programme
Dental practices can provide preventive care as part of the Childsmile programme for children up to 17 years of age. Maintaining good oral health depends on good diet, regular tooth brushing and intervention from the dental practice. The good habits and preventive care learned through the Childsmile programme need to be maintained in older children.
Preventive Care programme for adults
From 1 November 2023, you may notice that there are some changes to the way your NHS dental treatment is delivered. Based on NICE guidance, your dentist will determine how often you should have a NHS dental examination based on your treatment needs to ensure the best possible care. This may range from less than 6 months to every 2 years. If you are seen less often than 12 months then this is a sign of good oral health. It is important that you attend when recommended and don’t miss appointments.
Adults will continue to be offered a treatment plan which includes an extensive clinical examination. You’ll then receive any further treatments to manage and improve your oral health.
During your NHS dental examination you may be asked about any changes to your medical history, medication or any new allergies. You’ll also be asked about any changes you have noticed such as lumps, bumps or ulcers or if you are having any specific problems. You may also be asked if you smoke or drink alcohol, and if so, how much.
After they’ve established how your general health is, the dental team will do the following:
• examine your mouth including your teeth, gums and tongue
• advise you on how you can keep your mouth healthy
• explain any treatments you may need – if you do need dental treatment they’ll advise you of your options, including what treatments can be carried out on the NHS
• explain any treatment cost
During periods of time between dental examinations, if you have concerns about your oral health, particularly around any lumps, bumps or ulcers in the lining of your mouth, then you may wish to contact your dentist at the earliest opportunity and they will be able to see you sooner.
Your treatment plan
If you need treatment, your dentist will provide you with a treatment plan. A treatment plan is a document that helps to explain the treatment you need and what it will involve. It will also detail an estimate of how much the treatment will cost you. You may be exempt from NHS patient charges.
You can ask for a treatment plan whenever any treatment has been recommended for you. If you want to take a copy away with you, your dentist can arrange this. Ask a member of your dental team if you need help understanding your treatment plan.

Patient charges
From 1 November 2023, if you pay for your NHS dental treatment you may notice an increase in treatment charges. These increases are necessary to ensure that we are able to continue to provide NHS dental services and reflect the increase in cost of delivering the care required for patients.

Everyone in Scotland is entitled to free NHS dental examinations (including review examinations). For some patients all treatment is completely free.

Following a dental examination, the dentist will advise you of any treatment you require and the likely cost. They must also provide an itemised account, if requested.

As before, NHS patients who pay for their treatment pay 80% of the treatment costs. This continues to be capped at a maximum of £384 per course of treatment. Any costs over this maximum continues to be fully subsidised by the NHS. You will never pay more than £384 per course of treatment. The vast majority of patients will pay much less than this cost.

A dentist can ask for payment in advance. They can also charge a patient if they fail to attend for an appointment without giving due notice.

Who is entitled to free treatment on the NHS?
NHS treatment is free for:

everyone aged under 26
people who are pregnant or have given birth in the last 12 months
those with certificated exemption from patient charge because of income or receipt of certain benefits
If you are exempt from patient charges during a course of treatment, tell the dentist and ensure that you bring the evidence with you.

Around 40% of all patients are exempt from paying a contribution towards the cost of their NHS dental care.

NHS Low Income Scheme

Others may be entitled to dental treatment at a reduced cost through the NHS Low Income Scheme (LIS). The LIS helps towards some or all of the cost of NHS patient charges for those who are not automatically entitled to free treatment, who may have difficulty in paying. Help under the scheme is income-related and based on an assessment of each person’s ability to pay.

Read our help with health costs guide to find out if you are eligible for free or reduced cost NHS dental treatment.

What is prior approval?
Your dentist may inform you that they have to apply for prior approval before your treatment can be started. Dentists are required to seek approval from the NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) Practitioner Services, for certain treatments and/or treatment plans of high value. This process may take a little time and delay your treatment slightly.

Are all treatments available on the NHS?
Not all clinical procedures performed by dentists are available on the NHS. Procedures which are cosmetic or aesthetic in nature are usually only available privately. For example, white fillings, tooth whitening or dental implants.

Your dentist will be able to explain what treatment is and isn’t allowed on the NHS. If, for example, you wish to mix NHS and private treatment on the one tooth, such as an NHS root canal treatment with a private white filling, then this is allowed. Your dentist can provide you with an estimate of costs involved.

The following table sets out patient charges for common treatment items. The overall NHS fee paid will vary from patient to patient depending on the overall treatment plan require, but you will never pay more than £384 for a course of treatment.

Most patients with good oral health would require an examination, X-rays every so often and preventive advice.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Giving Page. To try to shift a few pounds 😉 I'm going to be swimming 10 kilometres in November to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. I plan to do this by swimming 45 lengths of the hydro pool 3 times a week. I'm doing this as one of my friends, Natasha...

Wee update for you all....
Firstly, I hope you haven't been missing us too much while we have been off 😉.
Going forward, we have two dentists starting around the end of Sept who will be covering most Mondays, every Tuesday, along with some Thursdays and Fridays also. So im sure you will agree that's great news! We have been so lucky with so many practices sitting with no dentists at all during these strange times and general lack of dentists everywhere.
Myself and Nicola might take the odd day off before then, although we haven't decided if or when yet, but if we do, my mobile will be on the answering machine as always for all emergencies.

So, just a wee update from Team West Kilbride....
Again, we have been moving check ups forward at the Dentists request as they are struggling to keep up with emergencies and treatments. Some of you will have had your check up moved on to next year by text etc and also explaining that our Locum David Wilson is finishing up at the end of August to take up his post in the Hospital as always planned, I'm sure you all wish him well and he will be missed. If you have any concerns that you feel needs seen sooner than your given time, please get in touch as we are happy to see you.
So, moving forward we will have a new locum/permanent Dentist but we don't know if it will be full time or just certain days, so once we know we will be able to move check ups back again, If you phone us around October time to find out as we will know the surgery session times better by then.
Dawn Matthews is staying on and will be here one or two days a week on a permanent basis.
As always thanks again for all your co-operation during this time, we really have the best patients!

A Wee Update....
So we are up and running full time again until September as David Wilson joined us on Monday. After that we hope to have another dentist ready to start along with Dawn Matthews continuing one or two days a week after David Leaves.

Letters from Largs Dental Surgery.....
If you are registered with us at West Kilbride please ignore any letters you receive regarding a dentist in Largs going private as this does not affect you, you have received this letter because you have been seen at Largs in the past and you are on their database.

New Patients....
At the moment we are not accepting new patients from out with the village as we are just too busy.

Again, as always, thank you all for your continued support recently, we really appreciate it.
