World Breastfeeding Week | August 1–7

This week, we celebrate the beautiful, complex, and powerful journey of breastfeeding.

As an FNP and IBCLC, I’ve walked beside countless families navigating the early days of feeding—through the joys, tears, cluster feeds, and late-night worries. Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s not always easy. It takes support, education, and compassion.

This year’s theme, "Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents," reminds us that supporting breastfeeding means supporting the whole parent—at work, at home, and in our healthcare systems.

Let’s continue to normalize asking for help, advocate for parental leave, and create spaces that protect and honor this vital act of nourishment and connection.

☀️ HEAT ADVISORY ALERT☀️
Hey everyone — it's your friendly neighborhood FNP here! 🩺 With extreme heat hitting our area, it’s crucial to take extra care of yourself and your loved ones. Here are some quick tips to stay safe and cool:

✅ Hydrate constantly– Water is your best friend. Skip the sugary and alcoholic drinks.
✅ Stay indoors- during peak heat (10am–4pm).
✅ Use fans or AC– and check on neighbors who may not have access.
✅ Wear light, loose clothing and sunscreen if you must go outside.
✅ Never leave kids, pets, or anyone in a parked car – even for a minute.
✅ Know the signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, or a fast pulse.

If you or someone you know shows signs of heatstroke (confusion, fainting, no sweating, very high body temp) — call 911 immediately.

When your little one starts crawling, the world becomes their playground — and safety becomes your top priority!

As a Nurse Practitioner and a parent advocate, here are my top tips for keeping curious crawlers safe:

👶 Use outlet covers & secure cords
🔒 Install safety latches on cabinets
🚪 Close doors to unsafe areas (bathrooms, laundry rooms)
🧼 Keep small objects out of reach (choking hazards!)
🛑 Anchor furniture to prevent tip-overs

Remember, baby-proofing isn’t about perfection — it’s about prevention. Start early, adjust often, and stay one step ahead of those tiny explorers!

As a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I often get asked what my role is and how I support individuals in their mental health journey. The short answer? A PMHNP is a highly trained, compassionate provider who diagnoses, treats, and manages mental health conditions across the lifespan.
