Many people ask me why I decided to become an acupuncturist. It's so obscure! So here's my story...
When I was around 16, I started having dizzy spells and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This gradually progressed to a point where I was constantly nauseated and dizzy, it was difficult to eat and at any point I could lose my balance completely. The doctors sent me for various tests that were hard to endure. One in particular, when I had hot and cold water flushed into my ears to purposefully create the sensation of intense dizziness, I had to be held down by two nurses as I was frantically trying to - what felt like - stop myself from falling.
After all the tests I was diagnosed with the youngest case known of menieres disease. This is a progressive disorder of the inner ear with no known cure and eventually causes complete deafness.
My doctor advised me that my next option, as medication had no effect, would be to remove both inner ears, leaving me completely deaf. As he put it 'you'll be deaf by the time you're 30 anyway'. I was only 17 at the time and thought I'd look around for alternatives before having anything removed.
