"Carotid And Vertebral Artery Dissection: A Guide For Survivors And Their Loved Ones" is debuting today in SPANISH! Ever since we published the book we have received feedback asking for a Spanish language translation. Today, it has arrived!! What do most moms of teething 13 month old toddlers ponder at 3AM while getting them back to sleep? This morning, it was cerebellar stroke, and the fragility of life.

I awoke to the sound of my 13 month old son on the baby monitor at 3:01AM today. His nickname is Baby Shark, and therefor the baby monitor is known as the “Shark Cam” in our house. And as happens with sharks, he seems to be getting a lot of new teeth these days. I don’t remember my own teethin...

The Stroke Blog is back. And what better way to get things rolling again than by jumping into the topic of Covid-19 vaccination???

Recently, it hit me. I’m a doctor. And I’m “on the internet.” But I don’t have YouTube channel. Well, I technically do, but the only videos I have posted are of my cat, and of my daughter doing an excellent cover of Imagine Dragons’ “Thunder” when she was three years old. But back to...

I sincerely, truly, passionately love treating patients with strokes. Today I witnessed an amazing emergency department team rapidly deliver needed stroke care to someone who never dreamed this was how 2020 would end, and because of this work there is hope. It has been a dark year in so many ways. And yet there is still so much that is right. Happy New Year's Eve - bring on 2021.

Since stroke has emerged as a complication of Covid-19, I am trying to post stroke-relevant information to The Stroke Blog to keep everyone updated. With so much confusion about whether Covid-19 cases are rising or declining and inconsistent reporting of numbers, it makes the situation more challenging. This is perhaps the best article I have seen in the mainstream media about Covid-19 and why it is not going away.

Today's post on The Stroke Blog discusses the first published randomized clinical trial comparing two therapies for patients with blood clots in the veins that drain blood from the brain (known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, or CVST). Check it out!

When the topic of stroke is being discussed, for the most part it is the concept of “blockages” developing within in the arteries of the brain – that is, the blood vessels that are carrying oxygen-rich blood *to* the brain to nurture its cells. These blockages can occur from the formation of b...

Today's brief blog post translates a new medical journal article that adds to the growing evidence that Covid-19 is a disease in which blood clots play a prominent role:

A paper appeared yesterday in The New England Journal of Medicine, adding to the growing body of evidence that clotting is a prominent feature in Covid-19, even if it isn’t always evident. People who develop difficulty breathing with influenza (“the flu”) or more run-of-the-mill pneumonias may...

Stroke is emerging as a complication of Covid-19. Today's post addresses this.

On April 28, 2020, a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine describing blood clots in large arteries supplying the brain (known as “large-vessel strokes”) in young patients testing positive for Covid-19 brought media attention to this particular facet of a disease physicians, he...

Today's post on The Stroke Blog is baseball themed, following an exciting World Series match-up.

I was born in Houston, Texas, and have fond memories of going to the Astrodome in the 1980s with my grandfather to watch the Astros play baseball. They knew that orange was the new black way before Netflix existed, as did their fans. This year, needless to say, I excitedly cheered them on this year....
