Joshua Bates School
On August 22, 2008 (17 years ago today), the Joshua Bates School at 731 Harrison Ave in the South End was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2 1/2 story Romanesque Revival brick building was designed by architect Arthur H. Vinal (of Boston) and built in 1884. The building features massive arches and picturesque round-topped windows.
The Joshua Bates School was named for an influential schoolmaster in the Boston School system. American poet James Hercules Sutton attended the school from 1947 to 1951.
The Joshua Bates School closed in 1975 as a consequence of court-ordered desegregation.
In 2003, the building was renovated and in 2006 rooms began being rented (at below-market prices) as apartments and studios to assist struggling, talented Boston artists. The artists currently living and working in the Joshua Bates building represent a variety of mediums including painters, sculptors, photographers and multi-media
