I spent yesterday making homemade bathroom spray for my our home, chest rub for a friend, and tick spray for my dog.

All with organic essential oils, organic olive oil, beeswax—no synthetic fragrances, no parabens, no phthalates.

Nobody talks about this root cause of menopause symptoms.

And if I had known this in my 20s and 30s, my perimenopause transition would have been completely different.

Here's what most practitioners don't understand about midlife women:

When you're in your 20s and 30s, your body can buffer stress, handle digestive issues, and manage hormone fluctuations without major symptoms.

But by the time you hit perimenopause, your body has been accumulating stress for decades.

And now, when your hormones start changing, your detox pathways can't keep up.

Here's what's actually happening:

Your liver is responsible for converting and metabolizing estrogen and other hormones.

But when progesterone declines first (starting in your mid-30s), and then estrogen starts fluctuating wildly month to month, your liver gets taxed.

Add in blood sugar dysregulation, hot flashes, weight gain, poor sleep, and your liver is working overtime.

The problem? Your detox pathways are backed up.

If there isn't enough bile to support estrogen detoxification (especially if you've had your gallbladder removed, as I did), your body can't eliminate estrogen properly.

So instead of being detoxified and eliminated, estrogen gets recirculated back into your body.

This recirculated estrogen contributes to:
→ Estrogen dominance symptoms
→ Weight gain (especially in hips/thighs)
→ Breast tenderness
→ Heavy periods
→ Mood swings and irritability

I had my gallbladder removed in my 30s.

But she's still bloated, constipated, and gaining weight around her middle.

You keep tweaking her nutrition plan.

You suggest meditation apps, breathing exercises, journaling.

She tries everything.

Nothing works.

Here's what you're missing:
Her anxiety isn't a mindset problem.

It's a nervous system problem triggered by dropping progesterone and spiking cortisol.

When progesterone declines during perimenopause, the nervous system loses one of its primary calming signals. The sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) becomes hyperactive. The parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest) becomes underactive.

The result?

Constant overwhelm. Racing thoughts. Feeling wired but exhausted.

I used to think the answer was to work harder with my menopause clients.

More meal plans. More check-ins. More education.

And when they still woke up at 2 AM or gained 15 pounds despite doing "everything right"—I felt like I was failing them.

Here's what I didn't understand:

I wasn't failing them because I wasn't working hard enough.
