My journey from chopper jock to goodness guru

It was a long and winding road. I don’t know about you, but my life hasn’t gone as planned or in straight lines. If I could go back and talk to my ego-driven, shaved head, determined soldier self, how would I explain that in 20 years I’d be cooking for a living instead of flying? In those days I lived on beer, buns and tabasco.

The first step on the road was the dream of flying. I studied aeronautical engineering, saved every penny for flying lessons and joined the air force as soon as they would let me. I became the first female helicopter pilot in the South African Air Force (SAAF) and spent the next 13 years serving in the military.

I think my dreams started to change as I studied martial arts. They led me to tai chi which led me to healing. When I left the military, I walked the Camino de Santiago and then spent a year travelling around the world. I worked on big project sustainability in London, small scale recycling in Guatemala. I taught tai chi in Spanish in Nicaragua and taught French to orphans in Morocco. I rode a pink fairy bicycle up the Alpe d’Huez and went canyon swinging in New Zealand. You might notice the travel bug got me a bit off track here…

But soon I was back in South Africa studying naturopathy and working to help my community go green and reconnect with where their food comes from. As I gained experience as a healer and nutritionist, I realised that so many people just don’t have the time to cook real nutritious food on a daily basis. So I started to do it for them, making Goodness Guru Goodies for sale at markets and this is when the cooking bug got me.
