“I’m lucky that I have a good husband and kids who understand – they understand how close my brother and I are.”

Dementia Australia Advocate Bernie often reflects on the times she shared with her brother, Michael, who lives with down syndrome and is in the later stages of dementia.

“I’ve got hundreds of photos that I go through, and I remember all the happy times we’ve had,” Bernie said.

“I still get really excited and happy when I go to visit him. Even though he doesn’t know who I am anymore, I go through his photo book which I made of our footy trips, holidays and adventures. I tell him stories of the photos, even though he doesn’t remember; he’s still happy to listen to them.”

“And if I get a smile, that makes my day.”

If you’re planning a visit to someone who has dementia, there are a number of things you can do to help make the most of your time together:

➡️ Consider the timing
➡️ Keep things to a routine
➡️ Get to know the care staff
➡️ Start a memory book
➡️ Engage in activities such as involving music, take a pet, or help with personal grooming.

Samuel West recently shared a poignant update on his mother, Prunella Scales, who has been living with vascular dementia since 2014. Following the death of her husband, Timothy West, at the age of 90, Prunella, now 92, has shown remarkable resilience. Samuel reflected on her enduring love for life, sharing that after a recent cruise, she expressed, "I don’t always know where I’m going, but I enjoy getting there," which he described as inspiring. Prunella, known for her role in *Fawlty Towers*, continues to work, recently recording voiceovers for a production at the Tabard Studio Theatre

❤️ "After my wife passed, I was stuck in the house a lot. I moved house, into the country, next door to my son - but it's not good enough just to sit watching TV, so I decided to travel. Occupy yourself. Dealing with the dementia group has been good for me. It's something that I enjoy."
