CARB COUNTING
Lets learn more about carb counting and meal planning:
It is recommended to take 40-65gms of carbohydrates in each meal. However, the amount can be higher or lower depending on an individual’s glucose control. If one has controlled glucose, he/she can take more carbohydrates because the glucose can be easily absorbed by insulin. However, taking a lot of carbohydrates in uncontrolled glucose will lead to high sugar in the blood hence hypergycaemia. By knowing the amount of carbohydrates in various foods, then carb counting becomes easy. The following provides a sample list of carbohydrates is some foods.
1 slice of whole grain bread=15gms of carbohydrates
½ a banana=15gm
Chapatti, small size(6inches across)=-15gms
1 cup of skim milk=12gm
1 small apple =15gm
Therefore if your goal is to have between 50-60 gms of carbs for breakfast, you can then choose
1cup of skim milk=12
2 slices of bread=30
½ a banana=15
total-57gm
**It is important to consult and work out with your doctor on the meal plan that works for you depending on your insulin dosage and glucose control.
