One of the areas our lab focuses on is Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS).

What is empty nose syndrome?

Empty nose syndrome is a rare upper airway disease that is thought to be associated with tissue loss of the inferior turbinates. We all have 3 pairs of turbinates, which function to warm and humidify the air we breathe, but often the inferior turbinates can become enlarged, causing nasal obstruction. A common procedure to alleviate this is a turbinate reduction procedure, in which turbinate tissue is reduced to improve obstruction and airflow.

Though most patients generally heal without complications, a small subset of patients unfortunately begin to experience some of the following symptoms after undergoing a turbinate reduction, which may be indicative of ENS:
