Constipation is not just a GUT issue

The story goes, to "fix" constipation, you must focus on the gut. You must have:

The perfect diet
Eliminate all the "trigger" foods

My 3 most potent tips to connect with the innate wisdom of your gut

Being in-tune with your gut is not just a health suggestion; it's a game-changer. Your gut communicates vital information to your body, influencing everything from digestion to mood. This intricate network highlights the profound connection between our gut health and overall well-being.

Most of us have never been taught the beauty of slowing down and tuning in. We are constantly taught to achieve, keep up, excel and never rest. This is a recipe for gut disaster.

So what can you do right now to change this story?

1. Touch Your Body
By simply putting your hands on your gut and feeling it, you can learn a lot. Pay attention to physical sensations and thoughts that come up as you connect with your body. Breathe into your gut and feel the gentle rise and fall of your hands as they hold your belly.

2. 4-7-8 Breathing Technique
I start all of my group sessions with this practice and its something you can do anytime. You can do it before you start work, before you go to pick up your child in the car, at your computer when something feels overwhelming. The point is, you can use this anytime you need to calm and regulate your nervous system.

3. Cold Plunge or Cold Shower
Cold exposure enhances immune function and teaches you to expand your capacity for discomfort. We are not living a life where we can just be "less stressed" we have to learn to increase our capacity to hold stress and teach our nervous system resiliency. A more regulated nervous system leads to better digestive function.

A healing food for one person can be poison for another.

We all have unique microbiomes, stress levels, traumatic experiences, belief systems and digestive capacity so why would one way of eating be best for all people?

It won't.

Our bodies and minds can respond differently to the same foods. This makes it important to either be super tuned in to how foods are making you feel or to measure and test how food is impacting your immune system. This was something that use to frustrate me endlessly as a dietitian. I was giving general advice based on symptom patterns but never truly seeing a persons unique biochemistry.

When you are struggling with digestive issues it is so common to:

➡️ Remove all general food triggers (gluten, dairy, cruciferous vegetables, FODMPA's, etc)
➡️ Fear your next meal and if its going to nurture or hurt your body
➡️ Go down endless research rabbit holes to try and identify "safe" and "healthy" foods

And guess what, this makes our digestive function worse.

In order to get clear on what foods are medicine for your body, you have to understand three key things:

1. How to regulate your nervous system
2. What foods are putting burden on your body (food sensitivity testing)
3. The diversity of your microbiome (stool testing)

The state of your gut health is linked directly to your hormonal health 😲

If you feel the typical symptoms of gut imbalance (think digestive symptoms, a lack of energy, a general state of ickiness, etc.), you may be surprised to learn that bloating + fatigue 💤 might actually be the least of your worries…

According to the 2017 review shared above, the gut microbiome is “one of the principal regulators of circulating estrogens.” Simply put, low microbial diversity reduces the amount of circulating estrogens, which can lead to a variety of pretty serious health issues—with PCOS, endometriosis, obesity, fertility issues + even cancer among them 😰

As always, being informed about the root causes of common health issues—and knowing how to implement proactive measures that support the foundations of wellness—are the absolute BEST ways to stave off discomfort + disease before they evolve into much bigger issues ✔️

All of this is to say that if:
- you’re suffering from digestive distress

Happy Mother's Day to all the fearless and resilient mamas out there! 🌸

Whether you're a new mom, a seasoned pro, a care-giver, or a fur baby momma, this day is for you! Take a moment to celebrate the incredible love and strength that comes with being a mom and a woman in general. Let's honor all the late nights, endless cuddles, and superhero multitasking skills.

You're doing an amazing job, and I see you! 👏🏼

I invite you to get still and really tap into what do you need today. Outside of all the shoulds, expectations, emotions, to-do's, etc... what do you need. Can you hear the messages from your body, from your energy fields, from the universe?

I have often struggled with asking for what I need or felt guilty taking the alone time I know my nervous system needs to recalibrate. Especially for my Discerning and Chameleon Gut Archetypes, it can be extra tricky to put yourself first.

When women step out of the the males structures that we have been told we have to adhere to, it creates more permission to be ourselves and heal.

Survival is at the core of our stress responses. Traditionally, the fight-or-flight response has taken the spotlight, but has been found to be more characteristically male. Female responses to stress are centered around connection and collaboration or as the research refers to it... tend and befriend.

Tending involves nurturant activities designed to protect the self and offspring that
promote safety and reduce distress; befriending is the creation and maintenance of social networks that may aid in this process.

When women step out of the the males structures that we have been told we have to adhere to, it creates more permission to be ourselves. Understanding that our stress response differs from the general male dominated narrative is liberation.

Piece by piece we will build a new paradigm of healing that honors the power of the feminine narrative.
