I tend to have my fingers dipped in a few too many honey pots at the same time (is that even an expression)? The trouble is I am passionate, curious and want to share what I know with the world.
💛
As you may know, one of my big projects right now is squamishBABY, a resource to help connect Squamish parents with the best resources needed to support healthy development and connection during the first few years of life.
💛
Tongue mobility has a big effect on craniofacial development, functional swallowing patterns and head, neck and shoulder posture. Registered Massage Therapists see a lot of patients who have these kinds of dysfunction. I'm developing a professional course for RMTs to help manage these kinds of issues from within the mouth, using functional movement of the tongue. This isn't something we ever addressed in our initial education and I believe every manual therapist should know how to at least screen and refer for dysfunctional patterns within the mouth.
💛
This type of course might seems completely off topic from my work with squamishBABY but that couldn't be further from the truth.
💕
Oral motor problems crop up early on, with breastfeeding, difficulty with tummy time, difficulty rolling. Later on headaches, speech, articulation, picky eating might emerge.
💛
The best time to intervene is at the earliest age possible. The baby days. The next best time is as soon as you realize that a problem exists.
⭐️
Most RMTs don't specialize in pediatrics, but we see this kind of disfunction over and over every day even if identifying the root cause is missed.
⭐️
Personally and professionally I am well placed to bridge this gap between speech pathologists, myofunctional therapists, ENTs, pediatric dentistry and bring this information to Registered Massage Therapists and parents.

So when I'm not changing poopy diapers, playing games with my five year old, or arranging play dates... these are the types of things I'm thinking about and attempting to take imperfect action on.
