On Listening and Watching:
Greetings from Iya Tahirah. I have had a wonderful Summer this year.
I got to visit with family members and friends from all walks of life. However the most favorite was the visit with my Elder aunt of 94 and one of my Godmothers who is just 96 and may I say these two visits offered me more inspiring words of wisdom and aspirations as to ways I might chose to redefine the meanings of wellness and holistic health. The first thing I wanted to know from both was advise on growing older and maintaining a healthy mental and emotional state of being. Here is their answers: Before I give you the story from the 96 year old,I want share this short back ground .As I am arriving at the home of aunte Doll,(the name we use as children) the first thing that triggered my memory was, 'Hum' she is still living in the same home she lived in when I was a teenager of 13. that in itself affirmed stability. I entered the house and found a 96 year old with all memories intact, she recognized me with out pause. "My, my where have you been, still looks the same 'of course minus some yesrs". Laughter and the conversations begins. My one question is still in mind " what leads to growing older and maintaining good mental and emotional health"? She answered by saying that is not difficult baby, you just got to remember to live good from your heart, be kind to yourself and other people and everything else falls in place. Wow that simple ha!
With this same question in mind, I later came the 94 year old with a different kind of question: as more of statement " aunt, I am just now coming to my 80th birthday, and unlike other times, I am feeling a little outer sort. 'My first advice is to not compare yourself with those people who might be of the same age as you and remember what's special about you and your gifts. These people may be in your peer group or the same age but they have not been where you have been and nor have they taken the time to grow themselves.
And remember that as we grow older, we go through some things, but we will continue to rise and most of all be true to yourself.
I share these two stories because, for many of us who have chosen to live a certain lifestyle that allows us to arrived at a measurable destination; one in which we can reap the benefits and lessons learned. Our destiny is not an age number it is a life lived we and we don't to give in, we continue to rise up.
Walking away from these two stories, I found a consistent theme that speaks highly to me as a way to fully embrace wellness and holistic health. Although there no particular sequence order given, I am going to use this as a next juncture for practicing wellness and holistic health.
I get that the first Key is:
1. Be true to yourself
2. Live your "life " and you will have your life purpose ( how simple is that?)
3. Love yourself, kinda go along with being true to yourself and
4. Spend time with yourself, a day by the water, or in nature, read a book, have a me out day
5. Daily meditation and exercise (10 minutes twice daily, ideally for me this is a 1.5 to 2 hours daily routine), however for many of you this could be a
stretch.
6. Journal writing daily
7. Schedule a vision Quest
8. Eat healthy fresh vegetables and fruits
9. Consult with a spiritual guide or teach and get a spiritual reading that is if you indeed experiencing a sift or emotional changes in your life.
10. Take time to harvest and review your life lessons. (Each year marks a complete cycle of ones life.)
