Back to in-person lecturing and what a thrill it was! One repeated theme over the last month while in school has been the importance of collaboration and the growth potential with integrative partnerships. In my second last semester of my MBA program at the Haskayne School of Business, I am learning so much in my Advanced Leadership and Business Negotiations courses here at the University of Calgary.
Since 2018, the have trusted in me to deliver unique, out-of-the-box content to the optician community across Canada. This past weekend was no exception bringing the first, live Eye Jeopardy to the stage. This partnership has been so valuable and I can’t thank them enough for continuing to entertain my motto of ‘See the Fun in Learning.’
I can’t wait to continue to connect with other partners to build collaborative, engaging content as 2023 rolls around. My passion lies in teaching, enhancing team culture, and showing that medical education doesn’t have to be so cookie cutter. Let’s connect and build something great for your team!
Who else wants Eye Jeopardy back as an IG Live event or in person?! I would also love to connect with those that lecture for any topic, I’m sure we could put something amazing together!

Hard vs Soft Skills: which is better to excel at? Which do you excel at?
Reaching back almost 10 years since graduation from in Chicago, I can only remember learning hard skills, aka, clinical skills while in school.
Fast forward 10 years later sitting in business school MBA classes, there is much more emphasis on developing soft skills to be a better leader.
Since starting this MBA program in September of 2020, while still working full time, I’ve tried to work more on myself. The clinical skills become much easier and more natural over the years, but people skills continue to evolve.
While I thought I had ‘good people skills’, I’ve learned so many areas I can improve. Empathy, active listening, motivation, communication, culture building, and even vulnerability are evolving in my repertoire.
Which soft skills have you found to be most useful?

The socks say it all: the past three weeks have been FUN
From pre-zoom meeting pep talks to new lecture slide backgrounds, this little guy has kept us quite entertained.
No matter how many years in school learning or lectures attended, it definitely didn’t prepare me for this new adventure. These new skills are a learn-as-you-go education.
Cheers to all you parents or parents-to-be for balancing work, patient care, life, side hustles, and relationships!
Here comes the dad eye doctor bod.

It has sure felt like I’ve been turned upside down over the last year.
The Instagram life always looks easier than the stumbling that happens day-to-day!
Year 2/3 of the MBA completed!
Courses spanning from Business Technology Management, Accounting, and Finance during the 1st semester to Entrepreneurial Thinking, New Venture Marketing, and Operations Management in the 2nd semester, and just finishing off 3rd semester with Strategic Business Analysis.
Burnt out at times, with this program requiring time management on a next level, and attempting to maintain work-school-life balance.
To those who graduated from any program recently, congrats! To those of us still going through courses, let’s keep riding the rollercoaster and come out the other side stronger, more resilient, and better leaders!
Cheers to a summer of not being a student!

How do you use your eye model?
Educate patients about their condition? Makes sense.
Use as a prop for Instagram photos?
Of course.
Joke with uncooperative kids that the eye model is from a patient that wouldn’t sit still?
… just me? 👁😉🤣

Vitreomacular traction (VMT): think of a puppeteer.
Symptoms? Ranging from no symptoms to metamorphopsia (distortion of central vision)
Clinical? OCT is the easiest way to observe any progression or change. If the VMT has caused some significant tissue change, a retinal photo or DFE may pick up the changes
Treatment? Typically monitoring every 6-12months. If a significant vision decline or tissue change, surgical intervention may be required

Spaghetti 🍝 anyone?
There are various reasons to express and different tools available to help do so! This video was an expression following an IPL treatment.
I find (wet) q-tips are the most gentle for patients and easiest to control.
I typically grade on a scale on 1-4: 1 being the clear vegetable oil (perfect) to 4 being the thick white toothpaste emission (in this video)
Don’t forget to also grade how many glands you are able to express! This will (usually) correlate to the meibography images - a powerful patient tool to view the health of the meibomian glands.
