Happy Lunar New Year. February 17, 2026 marks the start of the Year of the Fire Horse. ๏ฟผ ๐Ÿงงโœจ

A simple way I think about this in pediatric PT and pediatric acupuncture is this.
New year energy is not about doing more. It is about choosing one thing and repeating it calmly.

Try a 15 day family reset.
Pick one tiny habit that supports your childโ€™s nervous system and development.

Ideas.
2 minutes of floor time after breakfast.
One โ€œslow breathโ€ before transitions.
A calmer bedtime start with lights low and voices softer.
A short walk after school.

Save this. Then comment โ€œ15โ€ and your childโ€™s age if you want help picking the easiest habit to start with. ๐ŸŒฟ

Random Acts of Kindness Day reminder, kindness is meeting the child where they are.

For little ones, kindness often sounds like.
โ€œYouโ€™re safe.โ€
โ€œWe can go slow.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll follow your lead.โ€

In sessions, kindness can be.
One extra minute to help a parent feel confident with the home plan.
A quieter room and softer pacing when a child is dysregulated.
A gentle reset first, breath, pressure, acupuncture or acupressure, then movement.

Because a regulated nervous system learns better.
And kids do hard things when they feel safe.

Tell me in the comments.
What kind of support helps your child open up fastest?
Or, what is one small kindness you want more of from healthcare?

February is American Heart Month โค๏ธ

And tomorrow is Valentineโ€™s Day ๐Ÿ’Œ๐ŸŒท

Most of what weโ€™ll hear this week is about cholesterol, cardio, flowers, and chocolate. But in pediatrics, I think about the heart a little differently.
I think about heart rate variability.

When I evaluate a child with anxiety, sensory overwhelm, post concussion symptoms, or chronic pain, Iโ€™m often not just looking at strength or balance. Iโ€™m looking at how flexible their nervous system is ๐Ÿง

Heart rate variability, or HRV, tells us how well the heart and nervous system shift between states. A healthy system adapts. It speeds up, slows down, responds, and recovers.

A stressed system gets rigid.

We see that rigidity show up as shutdown. Meltdowns. โ€œBehavior problems.โ€ A teen who avoids the hallway because it feels like too much. A child who goes from calm to panic in seconds.

Research consistently shows that kids with anxiety have lower HRV. In simple terms, their nervous systems have a harder time shifting gears. That matters more than most people realize.

The hopeful part? ๐ŸŒฟ

We can train this.

Movement improves HRV ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ
Breathing at the right rhythm improves HRV ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Even simple acupressure like PC6 on the inner wrist has been shown to support autonomic flexibility ๐Ÿคฒ

This is where integrative pediatric care makes so much sense. Physical therapy is not just about muscles. Acupuncture is not just about needles. Both can directly support nervous system regulation when used intentionally.

And that changes how a child feels in their own body ๐Ÿ’›

So during American Heart Month, Iโ€™m thinking less about step counts and more about flexibility โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

And on Valentineโ€™s Day, Iโ€™m thinking about the kids whose hearts are working overtime just to get through the day.

If your child struggles with anxiety, transitions, sensory overload, or chronic pain, their heart may be telling you something important ๐Ÿ’“

Their nervous system might not need more discipline. It might need support.

Regulation before function.

If your child is in fight or flight, learning and movement get harder. Their system is spending resources on safety, not skill.

Clinical focus
Reduce distress
Create a calmer baseline
Then train function

If you want, comment BASELINE and I will share a few simple ways to build it at home.

Kids often shift faster and it is not because they are doing more.
Their nervous systems are simply more responsive.

In rehab we call this neuroplasticity.
In pediatric acupuncture literature it is described as a highly responsive system.

That changes how I design sessions.
Shorter visits.
Fewer points or areas.
Gentle input without long retention.

As a pediatric physical therapist, this matters.
Less time spent building tolerance.
More time spent building skills that carry into daily life.

Pediatric acupuncture can be no needle

In pediatrics, the goal is not strong stimulation. It is comfort, trust, and regulation

Many sessions use gentle tools instead
Shonishin, light tapping and brushing with a blunt tool
Tui Na, Chinese medical massage
Laser, microcurrent, tiny magnets, press balls

Often, fewer points and lighter input are enough

Save this for the next time you want options that feel safe and doable for your child
If you want a post on how I choose tools by age and sensory profile, follow and send me a DM ๐Ÿ˜Š

We often talk about milestones as isolated skills. Rolling. Walking. Talking. Behavior shifts.

But child development is not a checklist. It is a process that unfolds in phases.

In Chinese Medicine, the first years of life are understood through the Five Phases. Each phase carries a different kind of energy that shapes how children move, grow, regulate, connect, and relate to the world around them.

When we look at development this way, milestones start to make more sense. So do the moments that feel challenging. Big feelings. Sudden shifts. Bursts of growth followed by pauses.

As a pediatric physical therapist, this lens helps me see beyond what a child can or cannot do in a single moment and instead understand what their system is learning, building, and integrating over time.

This carousel walks through how the Five Phases show up across early childhood and what each stage is really asking for.

If you are a parent or caregiver, notice what resonates. There is no right or wrong phase to be in. Each one has a purpose.

Save this to come back to. Share it with someone raising a child alongside you.

Many people hear pediatric acupuncture and immediately think needles. In pediatric care, that is rarely where we start.

Pediatric physical therapy and pediatric acupuncture share more than most people realize. Observation. Listening. Gentle touch. Respect for nervous system readiness. Building safety before asking for change.

When regulation is supported, movement becomes more accessible. When movement feels safe, progress lasts.

This is not about doing more to a child. It is about choosing the right input at the right time.

Save this if you are curious about integrative pediatric care. Share it with a parent or provider who may find this helpful.

Today I returned to this path after a pause.
My spleen needed a break but not for too longโ€ฆ I love learning and itโ€™s a privilege to continue honing my skills and building my toolbox to be able to support my pediatric patients. I am not using needles right now and this held me back until I allowed myself to see the real blessing in this.

The beauty in the medicine of Acupuncture is beyond the needles that we use. Every practitioner knows the tools we use are extensions of our hands, and itโ€™s in our intentional touch that we initiate the first contact that creates the first ripple of healing.

Applying acupuncture techniques and tools adds another perspective through which I treat my pediatric patients. And as I immerse myself in learning more about Pediatric Acupuncture, Iโ€™m reminded of why I do what I do as a Pediatric Physical Therapist. I still have so much to learn and I canโ€™t wait.

I have created this new account as I started my private practice .co and I invite you to follow as I embark on my next adventureโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m guided to make this rose moon water tonight . . .

3 cups water with 33 dried rose buds under the light of the Super Flower Blood Moon + Lunar Eclipse . . .

I donโ€™t always perform rituals but Iโ€™m getting a strong nudge to do this tonight . . .

Iโ€™m all for simple and meaningful . . .

I will post more tomorrow . . .

โ€œThe lunar eclipse, which will be visible from Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific and the western part of the Americas, begins Wednesday at 4:47 a.m. EDT (0847 GMT) and will last about five hours from start to finish. The total phase of the eclipse, when the moon is covered in Earth's blood-red shadow, begins at 7:25 a.m. EDT (1125 GMT) and lasts 14 minutes 30 seconds.โ€ - space.com

Create some space for yourself tonight . . . it doesnโ€™t need to be complicated . . . just allow what comes through . . . And stay present to BE . . .

We are called to release our fears and get enough rest, as this is a very intense time, with energies amplified . . . what was in darkness now gets illuminated so it can be released . . . All of those who choose to get into this ascension vortex fulfill what has been coming, and many of us have prepared for it, to shift us all to the new paradigm of light . . .

Be gentle with yourself and those around you, and take extra care of your body which is your vessel to fully express the fullness of your being . . .

The light in me honors the light in you ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿค
