As most of you may know Alex Berlin is an alumnus of Sigma Alpha Epsilon here at Michigan State. He graduated in 2014. Less than one week after graduation he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma – a very rare and very aggressive bone cancer located in his right leg. After intense bouts of radiation and chemotherapy along with a surgery to successfully remove the remnants of the tumor, he was declared cancer free this past March. This past Monday (11/16) U of M hospital performed a biopsy on a spot in his lungs. Unfortunately, it revealed that the cancer was back. The doctors told us that the small node in his lung near his aorta was deemed cancerous once again. There are no words to describe what it feels like to hear that your brother has cancer once again after being told he was cancer free 6 months earlier. After a visit to the Sloan Kettering Hospital this weekend to have a second examination/opinion they have decided that his chemotherapy is going to start as scheduled for this Tuesday, November 17th.

All of the proceeds will go towards helping the out of pocket expenses that come with cancer all the way from plane visits to various hospitals around the United States, to different leg braces and medical expenses not covered by insurance. All remaining funds will be donated to charities dedicated to finding a cure for this horrible disease.

What's up party people?

On March 5th, 2015, I had a surgery that changed my life forever.

The surgery resected the top five inches of my fibula, scraped away some tibia, and wrapped calf muscles around to the front of my leg for better healing, shape, and function. The nerve involved was not saved, so now I have 'drop-foot' requiring me to wear a brace to keep my foot from hanging down.

The recovery will be extensive and physical therapy will be frustrating. But, when the top sarcoma surgeon in the world, at the best cancer hospital in the world asks, "How does it feel to be cancer free?"
..you can't help but smile and hug a giant orange balloon.

Hello all,

As you know I completed my final round of chemo in early December, which enabled me to rebuild just enough energy for the start of busy season at work.

We had originally thought that the end of chemo meant the end of any/all treatment, but the treatment I received (typical protocol for Ewing’s Sarcoma) did not completely eliminate the tumor as was expected. Last week we visited Sloan Kettering in NY for a 2nd opinion. The doctor there strongly suggested surgery to remove the remaining (dead tumor) mass in order to greatly reduce the chance of recurrence. I completely agreed and scheduled a surgery with him on March 5th to put the finishing touches on my battle with cancer. The surgery plan is to at a minimum scrape the tumor away from the fibula (which is the small shin bone where the cancer started) with the possibility of removing it all together. The down-side of the surgery will be the damage to my peroneal nerve, likely leaving me with a “drop-foot.” I will have about five days in the hospital post-op, three more weeks of recovery at home, then the next few months on crutches.

What's up y'all?

5 Months later: I have successfully completed radiation therapy and finish round 10/14 of chemotherapy today. I now have my last four treatments scheduled and will be done the Monday before Thanksgiving - let's just say many thanks will be given this year.

My doctor said she has never seen anyone power through this many rounds of chemo + radiation, every two weeks, without a break. I've been nicknamed "Superman" among my team of doctors and nurses. I can't stress enough the benefits of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle no matter what. But of course...I couldn't have done it without the support.

Hello all LiftForBerlin'ers,

It has been three months since my diagnosis and what a journey it has been. Today I will complete my 6th cycle of chemotherapy. The docs insisted that I receive a blood transfusion to boost my levels this past week so I'm feeling much more energized (maybe with this extra blood I can set some new weight room PRs). I have also started radiation therapy this week which will continue until early September. The MRI a few weeks ago showed the tumor didn't quite shrink like we wanted it to, but I have regained the ability to lift my foot more and more and I'm walking better each day. We're hopeful the start of radiation zaps this lil f'er to no return.

In the meantime, I have passed my final 2 CPA Exams and started work with Ernst & Young. If y'all don't know me by now, I'm not going to let anything hold me down, especially a little cancer n' chemo.

Keep submitting/snapping/tweeting/posting pictures as I hope to inspire and reach as many people as possible. I want to thank y'all for the tremendous support. The journey to recovery can't be done alone and I sincerely thank y'all for " " with me.
