Sjogren's Houston Houston, Texas Sjogren's Syndrome What is Sjögren's syndrome? Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by dryness of the mouth and eyes.

Autoimmune diseases feature the abnormal production of extra antibodies in the blood that are directed against various tissues of the body. The misdirected immune system in autoimmunity tends to lead to inflammation of tissues. This particular autoimmune illness features inflammation in glands of the body that are responsible for producing tears and saliva. Inflammation of the glands that produce

tears (lacrimal glands) leads to decreased water production for tears and dry eyes. Inflammation of the glands that produce the saliva in the mouth (salivary glands, including the parotid glands) leads to decreased saliva production and dry mouth and dry lips. Sjögren's syndrome with gland inflammation (resulting in dry eyes and mouth, etc.) that is not associated with another connective tissue disease is referred to as primary Sjögren's syndrome. Sjögren's syndrome that is also associated with a connective tissue disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or scleroderma, is referred to as secondary Sjögren's syndrome. Dryness of eyes and mouth, in patients with or without Sjögren's syndrome, is sometimes referred to as sicca syndrome. Medically Reviewed by a Doctor on 9/26/2013

I took many medications for several years. Hydrozychloroquine was one of them. It made my eyes worse for sight. My rheumatologist saw me and said my skin was ashy which meant the medication was affecting my liver. I just thought my skin was dry. One being a low chemo medication methotrexate, I mentioned this before, but it was also causing me some issues. I had breast cancer in 2018. I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. I truly feel like chemotherapy helped with Sjogrens as far as the all over body pain I was feeling. I have since quit seeing a rheumatologist. I do see an ophthalmologist for dry eyes. I have kept the same doctor because I have done my eye drops like restisis and others and they didn’t work. My ophthalmologist has eye drops made by a compound pharmacy and they are the only thing that has worked for me. I have been seeing him since 2010. I used to wake up with cruddy eyes like I had the red eye infection, Itchy and cruddy. These eye drops are a miracle. His name is Dr. Yee, Richard in the Bellaire area. I hate going to doctors and him because I hate the 45 minute drive and time spent there. But I have to tell you, people ask me why I don’t find another ophthalmologist near my house. It is because the compound eye drops work!
